We were lucky to catch up with Maribel Corona LPC-S recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maribel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
It was a struggle to be the mental health first responder to my clients during the pandemic. We were all struggling and keeping our own mental well-being in check was more important than ever, in order to offer my clients’ the support and guidance they deserve. I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor for over fourteen years and although I’ve overcome many hurdles when treating clients, nothing prepared me to be a mental health provider during a global pandemic. I’m not exempt from the same stress exposure many of my clients were facing and my own coping skills and self-care routine were tested to the max.
One of my outlets during the pandemic was to increase my social media presence by providing mental health tips to an audience larger than my client base. It was then I discovered Biosound Therapy! I saw a TikTok featuring a now dear colleague who offered this service in her practice. It took a one hour session to appreciate the benefits and I was convinced to offer this wonderful self-care tool to my clients. I bought it the day I tried it!
This was my defining moment, I created a whole new business around Biosound Therapy and expanded my therapeutic and business comfort zones. It has been a wonderful journey to build Minds At Ease Sound Spa and I hope to expand very soon since it is the first and only Biosound Therapy Sound Spa in the DFW Metroplex!
Maribel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My journey as a Licensed Professional Counselor began in 2007 in South Texas. My primary focus initially was to treat children, teens and their families. I truly enjoy using Play Therapy to treat young clients as play is a child’s language! My interest in this area motivated me to deepen my knowledge base, become a Play Therapist Supervisor and serve my community as the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the Play Therapy Association Board Member and ultimately President. In 2015 I took a business and personal challenge by selling my first practice and moving to Plano, TX where I made a shift in treatment modalities focusing on parents, adults, and couples. To do this effectively, I pursued training in the Gottman Method to treat couples. This method focuses on providing interventions which aid clients understanding and communication skills, to more effectively build a stronger relationship.
These relationships and most of my clients’ well-being were truly tested when the Covid-19 pandemic began and continues to today. With the increased level of stress clients are under I have noticed the work-life balance, tolerance to frustration, anxiety, depression symptoms have been impacted. The coping skills and self-care routines I encouraged clients to try were met with the reality of disrupted school and work routines, so I began to think outside the box for alternatives to help my clients and people in general to have a healthy choice to manage their stress. Opening Minds At Ease Sound Spa is my current step in my professional journey! Biosound Therapy uses binaural beats along with synchronized vibrations to calm the mind and body. Research has shown the use of binaural beats helps clients reach a meditative state within minutes which results in an effortless, hands-free relaxing, mindful experience which helps clients improve their well-being.
Have you ever had to pivot?
It has been increasingly challenging to treat clients during a global pandemic! No training had prepared me to work under the dire circumstances society as a whole has gone though for the past two years. All my skills were tested to the limit, I often tell colleagues therapists are also “first responders” but people may not see us that way as typically we are seen as masters of zen. The increasing need of stress management tools along with the challenge to engage in those activities made me think of alternatives to offer clients. I have expanded my comfort zone and made a professional pivot opening Minds At Ease Sound Spa! My desire to help clients self-care led me to Biosound Therapy, it’s such a joy to see someone try it and feel their mind and body ease into a relaxing state. Using different sound (tone) frequency to each ear through headphones, the brain interprets one, rhythmic frequency known as a binaural beat. The effects are enhanced with use of vibration technology which is synchronized with the sounds. The physiological response has been shown to help with stress and anxiety relief, concentration and memory issues, improve sleep, and provide pain relief. My primary purpose is to treat my clients as a therapist, but I feel compelled to expand the choices clients have to treat their symptoms using a safe, effective, non-invasive mind-body relaxing tool.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
During the beginning stages of the pandemic I too struggled to find an outlet to relieve stress and found it by sharing information about mental health topics on social media. It was out of my comfort zone to make videos on TikTok for example, but like I tell my clients, we have to desensitize to things we find difficult or scary, so I gave it a try. I found the experience of becoming a “Content Creator” amazing and I believe it has challenged me to think outside the box! Most recently, I decided that in order to provide clients and people in general another way to tackle anxiety, depression, stress, tension, and so many other symptoms which are felt not only in our minds but in our bodies I had to offer more services which relate to mental health but not exclusively psychotherapy. I’ve “unlearned” the belief my profession limits me to one task, I can be many things! Therapist, a Supervisor to five Licensed Professional Counselor Associates, Content Creator, and most recently Minds At Ease Sound Spa owner!
