We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marianne Angeli Rodriguez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Marianne Angeli thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I have always felt a pull toward creativity all throughout my childhood. Using my hands and my mind to create was the most rewarding feeling. After two degrees, a couple of career detours, and eventually getting laid off, I bought a canvas and some paint and have never looked back. In the beginning, I was mindful of my expenses, but I also knew that I had to take risks to get to the next level. I sold my first large painting that was displayed at a local restaurant and I took those funds to open my first studio. From there I sharpened my marketing & entrepreneurial skills by investing in online courses and I put in the hours creating work, discovering my voice and clarifying my vision on the way. In my experience, starting off for the first few years meant 70% running the business and 30% creating.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My work is intuitive, expressive abstract art with a focus on color. Naturally it appeals to those who love color, though my process is deeply rooted and motivated by my spiritual practice so I find that those who gravitate to my work have a resonance to the path of awakening balanced with a joie de vivre. I’ve been blessed to fill the need for art-lovers looking for a unique statement piece that brings liveliness and joy to their space. I offer large originals, giclee canvas prints, painted planters and paper prints. I’m proud of the quality and attention to detail applied to each creation and the customer service we offer to every client/collector. Our gallery is located in a very quaint, historic district and I love putting on shows and creating a blissful atmosphere for our visitors to escape to. It’s a blessing to do this work and I’m grateful every day for the opportunities that come our way.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Consider buying art from a local artist before buying commercial mass-printed art from a big box store. Bring something more meaningful into your home. Learn an artist’s story & philosophy. Even if you’re not ready to invest in an original, perhaps you can start with something small, like a limited edition print. Attend your local artwalks & exhibitions. Bring your friends and out-of-town guests. Curated art spaces enrich the imagination. Share or repost the work of an artist you love. Attend a workshop. Creativity in all forms is essential for our wellbeing as a society.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Freedom. The freedom to express. move and exist. To dwell in my authenticity and be devoted to nurturing that authenticity. And of course being in constant awe of, and enjoying, the miracle of color.
