We recently connected with Marianna Jamadi and have shared our conversation below.
Marianna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
REMEMBERING THROUGH RITUAL
KUNOKAIKU is inspired by the rhythms of the earth and the materials and colors that exist in the natural world.
By creating thoughtful objects that can harmoniously be incorporated into the home, KUNOKAIKU aims to bridge the gap between loss and life.
Ultimately, we hope these pieces serve as a tangible opportunity to honor loved ones that are missed, every day.

Marianna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
After the passing of her parents in 2017 and 2018, Marianna searched for more meaningful ways to grieve and honor her parents. Her work as a travel photographer has taken her to places where she witnessed other cultures processing death in ways she yearned for. With both of her parents cremated, she failed to find an urn that was as beautiful as her parents’ spirits.
Her experiences with loss have inspired her to create KUNOKAIKU. She hopes that these vessels serve as more than an urn and can aide in rituals to honor those we miss.
KUNOKAIKU pays homage to her heritage and her parents’ home countries of Indonesia and Finland.

THE IMPORTANCE OF RITUAL
Cremation can mean the absence of visiting a gravesite. This ritual of visitation and bringing flowers to a burial site can feel healing and connecting. Each size of KUNOKAIKU’S urns inspires a ritual practice. The small urn is designed for use with various candles and the medium and large urn are designed as two stackable pieces. The bottom will house the ashes and the top can serve as a vase to hold flowers and dried florals.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I believe that you can create beauty from even the darkest of places. I also believe that everyone is creative. Kunokaiku urns elicit a spark of creativity in the ritual you decide on. The urns allow your creativity to unfold by creating floral arrangements, choosing candles to your liking, and finding ways to personalize them in the home. I wanted to create something impactful and beautiful that felt timeless in the home.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a photographer and business owner, I can mold the creative side of the brand through visuals. Not only did I oversee the entire process of designing the urns, I can photograph them in a way that feels true to the brand. This is perhaps one of the most rewarding things about being a creative–starting from an idea and being able to bring it to life. Even more so, when the creative product is impactful or resonates with an audience, this feels even more rewarding. Expressing oneself through creative energy truly energizes me and allows me to find beauty in every corner of the world.
