Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mariana Monterrubio. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Mariana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
My story is not unlike many others’, but it is my own. For almost seven years, I lived with a drug-addicted partner and faced numerous trials, including domestic violence. Despite the warning signs, I chose to ignore them, as many do in relationships. As time passed, the addiction worsened, resulting in verbal, emotional and physical abuse. In 2004, I turned thirty and moved with my then-husband to Oklahoma City for his job, which he ultimately lost. However, I found work at a bilingual preschool and discovered my community. The women I worked with became my support system, empowering me to leave a failing marriage. With their encouragement and the help of friends and counselors, I returned to college and enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Business Management program at the University of Phoenix in July 2005.
Over the last 15 years, I have experienced tremendous growth and learning. My life experiences and career path have led me to establish my own business, MAMI on a Mission LLC.
Mariana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Discovering My Passion and Empowering Others to Achieve Their Dreams
In 2008, after completing my studies, I was uncertain about my career path. Nonetheless, I knew that I wanted to help people in some way, but didn’t know where to start. My answer came a year later when I was laid off from my job. I applied to several positions and was accepted as an employment coach at SER Jobs for Progress, now known as SER Jobs, a non-profit organization in Houston, Texas. Two years later I accepted a job offer with WorkFaith Connection and worked with a diverse group of clients, ranging from recovering drug addicts to ex-offenders, men and women living in shelters and people who lost hope and failed to recognize their self-worth. I collaborated with other organizations such as Family Houston, and United Way of Greater Houston, and became a certified employment coach, financial coach, and life coach. In my 13 years of experience, I learned how to work with clients, listen to their stories, help them establish goals, and create plans to accomplish them.
My greatest passion throughout my career was working with and assisting women. Unfortunately, the pandemic led to my termination in 2022, but it also provided me with the opportunity to pursue my dream of starting my own company, MAMI on a Mission. As a single mother who was once a couch surfer and on government assistance, I know what it’s like to start from scratch and feel like your dreams are unattainable. Nonetheless, I proved myself and those around me wrong, and I’m now living my dream. As a coach, I provide my clients with encouragement, empathy, and accountability, with a deep understanding of their struggles.
My debut book, MAMI on a Mission, Mujeres Alcanzando Metas Imposibles: A Guide Towards Healing, Self-Discovery, and Walking In Confidence, was recently published, and it became Amazon’s #1 bestseller in the Personal Testimonies category. In this book, I share my journey and the lessons I learned along the way, empowering others to achieve their dreams.
