We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mariana Lopez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mariana below.
Mariana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
My journey with Sweet Nation Co. is deeply rooted in a family legacy of culinary excellence. Before Sweet Nation Co., my family owned a successful business in the wedding cake sector and restaurants. They thrived under our care, becoming a beloved staple in our community. However, when my mother decided to retire, she made the difficult decision to sell the businesses.
Two years later, I felt the call to continue our family’s culinary legacy in a new venture. Inspired by our previous successes and fueled by a burning passion for baking, I opened Sweet Nation Co. With the support of my family, including my mother, who willingly came out of retirement to join me on this new journey, we embarked on a mission to create something truly special.
In the beginning, we set out with a simple plan: specialize in luxury wedding cakes and offer quality cake supplies. We believed in our ability to carve out a niche in Houston’s bustling pastry scene through exceptional craftsmanship and personalized service. But as any business owner knows, the road to success is paved with challenges.
Yet, it was during the middle phase of our journey that we encountered the unexpected. As we created wedding cakes and sold cake supplies, a fascinating trend emerged – a growing interest from our customers in learning the art of baking and cake decorating. It was an epiphany that changed the trajectory of Sweet Nation Co.
Embracing this newfound passion, we made a pivotal decision to expand beyond the confines of a traditional cakery. Sweet Nation Co. transformed into a pastry academy, and I found myself transitioning from cake artist to mentor. The shift from crafting cakes to teaching the craft was both thrilling and challenging.
We started small, offering weekend in-person classes that invited locals to step into our kitchen and learn the art of cake decorating firsthand. These classes, taught by our family of skilled bakers, quickly gained popularity as word spread about the unique experience we offered. The demand for our classes grew beyond our expectations, prompting us to explore online education. We created a platform that allowed aspiring bakers worldwide to join our classes virtually. The online community flourished, and Sweet Nation Co. gained over 27,000 followers on Facebook, forming a dedicated community of baking enthusiasts.
Our academy expanded its offerings to include a comprehensive 6-week pastry certification program. This program covers everything from trending cake decorating techniques to crafting pastries and cookies. We became a hub for individuals looking to scale their baking dreams or simply enhance their skills for the joy of family and friends.
As we transformed Sweet Nation Co. from a traditional cakery into a pastry academy, my mother became a full-time instructor, sharing her wealth of knowledge and over 30 years of experience in the industry with eager learners worldwide. Her presence not only added invaluable expertise to our team but also infused our academy with a sense of tradition and familial warmth.
One of the unique aspects of Sweet Nation Co. is our commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. Recognizing the importance of catering to diverse communities, we became the only bilingual academy in Houston, offering classes in both Spanish and English. Our recipe guides, lectures, and instructional materials are available in both languages, creating a welcoming and safe space for the Hispanic community to learn and thrive in their native language.
This dedication to inclusivity has not only expanded our reach but also enriched the learning experience for all our students. It’s a testament to our belief that everyone should have the opportunity to pursue their passion for baking, regardless of language barriers.
As we continue to grow and evolve, Sweet Nation Co. remains a beacon of culinary excellence and cultural diversity in the heart of Houston. Our story is not just one of success, but of resilience, adaptability, and a steadfast commitment to empowering individuals through the art of pastry making. And at the heart of it all, lies the unwavering support and expertise of my mother, whose legacy continues to inspire us every day.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for Sweet Nation Co. has been a combination of word of mouth, referrals, and social media. While word of mouth and referrals have been instrumental in bringing in new clients, our social media presence has played a significant role in expanding our reach and attracting a wider audience.
We’ve invested time and effort into creating engaging content on social media platforms, particularly through trending reels and consistent daily posts. By showcasing our creations, sharing baking tips, and offering sneak peeks into our classes, we’ve been able to captivate our audience and generate interest in our services.
Hiring a dedicated social media manager has been a game-changer for us. Their expertise in curating content, engaging with followers, and leveraging social media algorithms has greatly enhanced our online presence and visibility. As a result, we’ve seen a notable increase in inquiries, bookings, and overall client engagement.
Overall, the combination of word of mouth, referrals, and strategic social media management has proven to be a winning formula for attracting new clients to Sweet Nation Co. It’s a testament to the power of leveraging both traditional and modern marketing channels to grow our business and connect with our audience in meaningful ways.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The COVID-19 outbreak presented one of the most challenging times for Sweet Nation Co., but it also showcased our resilience and determination to adapt and overcome adversity.
As the pandemic swept across the globe, restrictions and lockdowns forced us to temporarily close our doors to in-person classes and events. Like many businesses, we faced the daunting task of finding alternative ways to stay afloat while navigating the uncertain terrain of the pandemic.
In response, we quickly pivoted to offering online classes, leveraging technology to bring our expertise directly into the homes of our students. It was a steep learning curve, but we were committed to providing valuable learning experiences and maintaining connections with our community, even in the face of unprecedented challenges.
Simultaneously, we recognized the importance of supporting our vendors and suppliers who were also struggling amidst the crisis. We expanded our product offerings to include not only pastry supplies but also essential items that were in high demand during the pandemic, such as baking ingredients, kitchen equipment, and sanitation products.
By diversifying our product line and embracing the online platform, we were able to not only stay afloat but also continue to support our vendors and serve our community during a time of great need. It was a testament to our resilience and adaptability as a business, as we navigated the complexities of the pandemic with creativity, compassion, and unwavering determination.
Through perseverance and innovation, we emerged from the challenges of the COVID-19 outbreak stronger and more resilient than ever before. It was a reminder of the power of resilience in the face of adversity and the importance of staying true to our values and commitment to serving our community, even in the most challenging of times.
