We recently connected with Marian Turner and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I’ve always loved games. From family board game night, to playing Dungeons and Dragons with our regular Friday night group I’ve always had a passion for being creative and having fun playing games. I have a background in coffee, previously working for the biggest name in corporate coffee shops, so I also have a passion for making wonderful espresso drinks, brewing a great cup of coffee, and all the connections that coffee can bring to the community. My husband and his best friend and I had the idea to open a board game and comic book store, but to make it more inclusive, clean and welcoming. Then we had the idea to have a small coffee bar in the shop to set us apart. But the more we talked and did market research we found a huge gap in the existing game and comic stores.
We wanted something to set us apart. How can we be different? So we merged the idea of cozy coffee shop and game/comic store into one Chaotic Good.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Chaotic Good isn’t just a coffee shop, it isn’t just a game store or comic store. It’s a place where a community of people can gather and share their passions. We wanted to create an environment of inclusivity. Often times, women and the LGBTQ+ population feel ostracized by the gaming community and we wanted to create a place where EVERYONE felt welcome, no matter the background. We wanted a family friendly environment, and a clean, comfortable atmosphere.
We have created a place where people can come together and have fun and indulge in their hobbies and activities without fear of judgement and in a comfortable atmosphere
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media has had a huge impact on our business. Constantly uploading pictures and making sure events are shared through our Facebook and Instagram is pivotal! We are currently in the process of creating a streamlined website so customers will have one place to find all the info they need. And never underestimate the power of the word of mouth! Creating loyalty to our business and having our customers spread the word has been a phenomenal help as we grow our business!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Being a small business owner is all about flexibility. Sometimes working with a team of co-owners is great, but sometimes it can also lead to different opinions on how to get things done. The biggest thing I’ve learned is how to listen and how to trust. One person can’t accomplish everything, you have to be able to trust your team. When the store first opened I may have been a slight control freak, wanting everything to be a certain way. But I’ve learned to trust my co-ownership team and my employees I’ve hired. Sometimes there’s not one correct way to get things done, and you have to be flexible and listen.
