We recently connected with Mariama Sallah and have shared our conversation below.

Mariama, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?

My last year as a culinary arts student I took an 8 week cake decorating course. My initial goal was to start making my daughter’s birthday cake. I was not confident enough to sell my cakes but as I got better I realized my passion is to make people happy on one of the most important days of their lives (their wedding day. I worked on elevating my skill set and now I primarily focus on over the top luxury wedding cakes.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi, I am Mariama, a mom of three who fell in love with the beautiful artistry of cake design while attending culinary school. From zero experience in cake decorating to winning a gold medal in 8 weeks my new found passion was born. My aunt was a baker and my best memories were when she would make a delicious cake batter that would later be baked into a pound cake. I remember admiring her because baking was intriguing to me. I initially took interest in cake decorating because I wanted to start making my daughter’s birthday cakes but I began getting orders faster than I expected which made me soon realize that I loved making people happy through my craft. One thing that fuels my passion is seeing the satisfaction on my clients faces when they receive a delectable cake for their wedding. Your wedding day is a moment you dream about since you were a kid and for me; being a part of such a precious moment; mean a lot. My inspiration for my designs comes from so many places such a fashion; art pieces; elements from your wedding and other cake artists. Delectable cakes is known for our “not too sweet,” scratch made; luxurious cakes that are a showstopper at your celebration. I want to break the stigma that “beautiful cakes don’t taste good.” My happy place is creating something unique you. At delectable cakes we don’t just sell you a cake; we provide a one of a kind experience every step of the way.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

Steering away from a scarcity mindset “if I help the next person then they will be more successful,” instead I believe in abundance. My believe is “We can all eat,” and I learned this a little into my entrepreneurial journey from one of my mentors. There is a misconception that the next cake artist is your competitor but, the reality is we can all coexist and be successful. I believe in collaboration over competition.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

The most rewarding part about what I do is the satisfaction/happiness on my clients faces when they receive a delectable cake. It makes all the hours spent creating worth it. I believe that when you provide a one of a kind experience people never forget it and they never stop telling it
