We were lucky to catch up with Mariam Ghouri recently and have shared our conversation below.

Mariam, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

I have always had the passion for all things education. Teaching always came to me so naturally. I initially started offering private tutoring sessions in my highschool days and continued to do so well beyond college. In my experience of tutoring, I noticed the stark differences in learning that happens in a classroom setting, amidst large groups of students versus what occurs in a 30 minute, one-on-one session with the student. I was amazed to see how spending a few minutes of quality focused time with the student rendered far more effective than an hour of class time spent at school. It was clear to me then that individual attention and teaching to the students’ diverse learning styles are essential elements that determine their success.

After graduating college in 2011, I was forced to take a hiatus from teaching and tutoring when I went on to pursue graduate studies in Healthcare Management and work in the industry. However, the universe always has a way of bringing you back to your calling and purpose. I truly felt that educating was my purpose and I jumped at the oppurtunity to start up My Tutoring Spot, when I was approached by a family who wanted to hire me to homeschool their three yound children. I was ecstatic, I knew this was really where I could make a difference.

Although, I had never took on such a great feat, I was determined to figure it out and was very excited to learn along the way. Who knew the years that would follow, would be of phenomenal growth and learning, and much success – not just for my kiddos but for me as well!

Mariam, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I have been in the education industry for over 15 years now and have been homeschooling (not only my chilrdren but others as well) for more than six of those years, with the help of my amazing team of qualified tutors.

My Tutoring Spot not only offers quality, one-on-one supplemental education, which is catered to each individual student’s unique learning style, but we also provide complete homeschooling services for grades 3-12.

Futhermore, we specialize in homeschooling through highschool, which many parents may find daunting. Our services include end to end support in homeschooling through highschool, dual credit enrollment, complete with official highschool transcripts ready for college applications.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

Covid has to be it. It affected many buisnesses aroung the world and mine was not an exception. My entire business model was built upon in-person, face-to-face interaction between the tutors and their students. Once Covid hit, and the entire world shut down, we had to find another way or close down. Thankfully, my clients were very receptive to switching to online learning. I had to make sure I provided the best platform for seamless interaction and learning between the students and their tutors. It all worked out in the end, but was most definitely a scary moment for the business.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

I think building a relationship of trust with my clients has really helped the reputation of the business. I make it a point to get to know my clients on a personal level, which allows them to feel at ease and they can trust me with their children’s academic needs.
