We were lucky to catch up with Marialys Maestre recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marialys, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
After 10 years of being in the Makeup and Hair industry in South Florida, I have decided to lead a different approach and mission for my business. I rebranded recently to the “The Inner Muse Collective”. What this means to me is placing importance on the relationship you have with yourself. Starting my business at 16, I can say that I am not the same person I was then, now at 27 years old. Being raised in hustle culture and being a first generation immigrant has been very difficult to change the way I view life and my career. I’ve worked very hard and have enjoyed the fruits to my labor, but always come back to a common theme of being burnt out or just feeling lost without a purpose. Throughout these years, I’ve searched within to see what truly fills me and what I hope for my future. Connecting with the women I meet through my profession has undoubtedly been a key factor to what I love most about what I do. Listening to their stories, offering each other advice, and feeling a sense of understanding and connection. That is why I decided to rebrand and hope to connect women through my line of work. Create events and moments where women can come together in a safe place to share their knowledge, extend a helping hand, and create a community of women who strive for a more meaningful way of life.
Marialys, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew a passion for makeup artistry at 16 and pursed her hobby all throughout college while studying management in business administration. At first my passion started as a means to make it through school. Eventually when I graduated with my bachelors, I realized I was at a point in my career where I did not want to start working a corporate life, but instead work for myself.
I provide makeup + hairstyling for any event. I also have a team of artists that assist for bigger parties. We mostly work events such as weddings, maternity shoots, graduations, quinceañera shoots, etc.
I can say that the type of services I provide eases people to know they can trust me in providing the service they hope and inspire for their special day. I am very patient, understanding, and a good listener when it comes to my clients needs. The culture and mission surrounding my business is what most of my clients have spoken is what drew my work to them. The eye can appeal to people, but what I feel like truly makes impact is how you make them feel. For special days, I understand you want the energy around you to be fun, inviting, positive, and more importantly a genuine experience.
I am most proud of the connections I’ve made and also the people I’ve helped along the way. I truly feel like I am pursuing my purpose when I am in community and in service to others. What I hope potential clients feel from my work is an invitation to a have good time where we can feel safe to be present in our truest selves. I hope my work encourages people to be themselves; although I am physically accentuating and making them feel beautiful on the outside, I can also speak to their minds and hearts and encourage self love and acceptance.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that the way people project has nothing to do with me, but more to do with how they feel in the inside.
Working with many people, requires coming across many different characteristics and personalities. I’ve come across people that are not so pleasant to be around. I’ve had to learn that I am in control of my feelings, boundaries, and the energy I allow to consume me. Whenever I am presented with a job that requires me to be more patient with someone that is insecure with their physical self, I’ve learned that I shouldn’t question myself and my work, but rather understand that it has nothing to do with me. I don’t allow for negative energy to consume me rather understand where it comes from and know that energy is not mine to entertain.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Meeting people from all walks of life and having their stories impact my understanding of life. Offering them advice, practices, and ways that have helped me get ahead on my journey to living a more blissful and positive life.
