We were lucky to catch up with Marialaura Lucchetti recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marialaura, thanks for joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
Before having my own design brand I have been working as product development manager for luxury fashion groups as Chanel and others.
Those years working for such amazing companies gave me the chance to learn how the fashion biz works, basically the whole process from the idea to the finished product.
In particular developing top quality products have given be the necessary knowledge of components and materials that is needed by a good designer to create good collections.
Marialaura, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a woman designer mumpreneur. Born in Tuscany, grew up in New York, Africa and South America. Very curious as girl and still today, I am an open minded and passion driven creative woman.
Honestly the idea of a future life in fashion was not so crystal clear in my mind until the age of 25 when I got into Prada thanks to a degree in International Political Science and there I discovered a passion for the back stage of the luxury fashion world.
So that’s how my career in fashion began travelling and living abroad for several years and working for other luxury brands.
Things changed when I decided to get back to Tuscany and have a family. The Italian fashion industry system had no space for a woman busy being a mum and as soon as I got pregnant my work contract wasn’t renewed. At that time I was very disappointed but now I know that having free time, taking care of my three kids at the beginning of their lives was the best thing it could happen to me.
By the way a few years later, after the success of a mono-earring I had made with my hands, I founded Lalla’s and produced my very first collection of handmade artisanal jewels.
Still today I think, research, develop and hand-craft each new piece with extreme dedication and passion.
My product development knowledge and my life experience living and breathing different cultures have both ended up in the collections together with my need to share through my pieces the care for the planet reducing the use of plastic in general.
In 2016 the collections were exposed in Soho, Manhattan for four months , selling my uncommon design necklaces in a Temporary Made in Italy design Showroom.
In 2018 the necklace Pianeti (the knot) won the Bronze of the prestigious A’ Design Award and Competition in the jewelry category among many design works coming from 180 countries of the world.
Wearable from morning to night, Lalla’s jewels are chosen according to the mood living you free to be yourself.
Designed for those who one day feel urban and the other one jungle, for those who don’t always wake up with the same mood and dress up accordingly.
For those who are free to choose not depending on fashion, remaining themselves. For those who are sensitive to the materials’ circularity, knowing that what we create gets back to us. So it better be sustainable.
Lalla’s is for those who are looking for a piece of jewelry that makes the difference upgrading their style.
For those who want to make that difference every day while staying themselves.
So what ever you wear, which ever color you choose, there will always be a perfect Lalla’s piece that is going to enhance your look helping you to stand out and happily remain yourself.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me as a creative designer and handcrafter, the most rewarding aspect is seeing the happiness on the face of those who chose a Lalla’s discovering that they can’t wear any other jewel anymore. As a matter of fact many of my clients have a Lalla’s for any occasion.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is in the brand “Payoff” which is B-U-B-TRUE (be you be true).
Basically I believe that all of us just want to be happy and to achieve that happiness first of all we must have the guts to be truly ourselves , no matter what. So my creative mission is to help people reach that happiness just freely choosing to wear an earring or a brooch or a necklace that enhance their personality showing it freely to the world.
For example, lately a woman came to my lab looking for a new jewel but she didn’t know exactly what she was looking for. Then she saw a red and gold mono-earring and said to me that she’d loved to have it but her daughters wouldn’t have approved it on her. So she tried on several other pieces that her family would have expected from her. Her eyes however, were always going back to the mono-earring. At that point I just told her that she had chosen already and in the end she went away wearing an amazing happy smile and that one side long earring.
That day I just helped her to dare being herself. I had reached my goal, making you be you.
