We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mariah Scott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mariah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success, that word means so many different things and can be interpreted based on the eye of the beholder. One definition of success for me is living without a filter and being unapologetic with who I am as a person. In today’s world its so easy to become distracted by outside noise. Its easy to get caught up in what’s popular, what gets noticed, what the trend is and so on. Success is breaking thru the easy road, the popularity contest and ripping apart social norms. Its about being true to who you are and sticking with what makes your soul glow.
Its not an easy thing to do. And to become successful, failure is part of the equation. That is what separates those who are truly successful and those who are not. Its dealing with those failures and realizing the lessons behind them to persevere and push thru. When you know who you are as a person and have a solid foundation success is a reward for staying true to yourself and your goals.
Mariah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience, should probably be tatted across my chest. I have had so many set backs in life. I have heard “no” time and time again. “No” your not this, or ‘No”, you don’t have enough experience. “no” …”no” ….”no”. Your too thin, do really know how to cook? or your black, you must only cook soul food. People are quick to judge and place you in their box of limitations.
The word “no” can be hurtful and discouraging and can make you doubt yourself. Like am I going about this the right way?, or should I change who I am to conform to get a “yes”? These are all questions I have asked myself. But being resilient means that you have to be able to withstand and recover quickly from difficult situations.
I have learned that people place their own fears and insecurities on you and it is not up to me to conform to others standards.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal and mission in life is to inspire people to live. To live life on their own terms and do what makes you happy. It sounds easy but its a difficult thing to do. My creativity in life is used to show that just because you came from the hood, or have challenges in life that its OK. Don’t be embarrassed. We all have a story. And to be truly happy you have to start from somewhere. Start with what you have and go from there. If you don’t know what makes you happy, explore, but it all starts from within and getting to know yourself. I am here to serve and inspire. My creativity is part of the process to be able to do that.
