We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mariah Phillips a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mariah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Having self discipline, passion, & being able to connect/relate to your audience are 3 key things that cater to a success story.
Mariah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Mariah Phillips, I am the owner of MountMariah, which is an Online Women Clothing boutique. I got my start by working in an actual in store boutique from the age of 17-22. I found myself running this boutique from top to bottom all while being compensated really low as well as being mentally and verbally abused. I was at my lowest point, one morning as I was dreading getting ready to go into work, I found myself on the floor in distress. Enough was enough, in that very moment I pushed myself to apply for my EIN. When I saw how quick and fast that process was, I didn’t allow anything else to get In the way of me and my vision. This was November of 2019, fast forward to March of 2020, covid 19 hits and while I was doing a lot of work behind the scenes to prepare for my launch, this gave me an even bigger opportunity to fully commit myself to my business. Having my days freed up from work, allowed me to create a strict discipline schedule. I committed 12 hours each and every day to working on the launch of my business. From building my website to taking and editing photos. I would actually say I am most proud of how focused I am to honoring my commitment to my business. I find myself aways seeking ways to improve any element of my business which is key to growth. I think the biggest thing that sets me apart from others would be my ability to foster a sense of community among customers through social media. It’s led me to develop a really sincere connection with my audience in return establishing lifelong friendships. As an online boutique owner, the biggest problem I help solve for anyone browsing my website would be guidance on styling. Most of my products have a “Style Guide” section that gives you a brief summary on the multitude of ways you can style the item that’s within the listing. I think the main thing I would want potential clients and followers to know about me is that I am steady building my brand. What you see on my website isn’t the entirety my vision. I am aiming to be as inclusive as possible, from offering more styles and sizes, to branching out to men clothing. The end vision Is to be a one stop shop.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience on social media mainly through TikTok. I made it a mission to study the algorithm day and night. Through trial and error, I was able to find a routine that worked really well for me, all and all I would say consistency is what gave me the results I was looking for. I biggest advice for those looking to build a social media presence would be to remove anyone from your hometown that may make you uncomfortable or anyone that may be giving off unsupportive energy. Although its best to not care of what others negative opinions may be, the human brain often kept help to escape those thoughts which is why I recommend removing any bad energy from your social media platforms until you’re comfortable enough to not care.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Yes, there is a book that I read that played a HUGE role in my success. It’s called “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. It’s a book that goes into detail about the power within your thoughts, words, and even actions. After reading this book, I went to WORK on my thoughts. Re arranged my thought lifestyle to purely positives. Incorporated writing into my daily schedule and shortly after is when I had my biggest day of sales to date.
