We were lucky to catch up with Mariah Kaercher recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mariah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Much of what we do is driven by the Japanese philosophy of ‘ikigai’. Ikigai is most closely translated as ‘life worth’ and is based on 4 main considerations: what you love, what the world needs, what you are good at, and what you can be paid to do. It is the focus on harmoniously combining these 4 elements of mission, passion, worth, and profession that allows one to be truly happy and successful.
The ikigai symbol is the inspiration for the Ranch’s logo and influences everything we do at Pikes Peak Ranch. The ranch is a a space for people to connect with their loved ones, experience nature, celebrate love, and leave feeling nourished and joyful. We hope you experience the ranch for it’s true purpose and invite everyone who joins us on the Ranch to share in our awe of the nature that surrounds us every day and the joy of being present in every moment.
Mariah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We got into our industry from the desire to be our own bosses, bring people together, and live a lifestyle that connects us with nature and each other every day. Our passion is people and the guests that come to stay at the ranch. Our goal is that guests leave feeling nourished, connected, and a sense of joy!
At the ranch guests come to rent and stay at our cabins year-round to experience the natural beauty of the Colorado mountains. Each cabin has a hot tub, stunning mountain views, stocked amenities, and high-end mountain feel.
We host a variety of events including weddings, retreats, reunions, and more. Whether it’s a wedding, retreat, or reunion, you have the entire 110 acres to explore your own private slice of the Rockies. Our onsite lodging can sleep up to 40 guests, with additional lodging options close by. Our 2,700 sqft venue with attached 3,000 sqft patio and outdoor bar overlooks incredible views of the mountain. We have multiple gathering spaces, getting-ready suites, gorgeous mountain views, a year-round creek, and more!
When we read guests’ reviews and they tell us how amazing their stay was and that they can’t wait to come back, we feel pride in our work and our mission. We have guests who come to the ranch year after year to experience the ranch’s beauty. Our most heartfelt moments come when guests come back and share what the ranch means to them with their family and friends.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pikes Peak Ranch is the first business Jack and I have started, together or separately. We pivot and adapt in our decisions daily and I would say it is one of the pillars of our success. When researching this endeavor we did our best to create multiple plans, outcomes, and strategies. On day one of taking ownership of the ranch many of those plans went out the window as we learned firsthand experience of the reality of the business. We needed and need to pivot constantly as we learned new information, or as projects had twists and turns along the way.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been networking and building vendor and community relationships. In our industry of weddings, events, and rentals it has been extremely important to network with event vendors and show them the ranch in person so they understand who we are and what we are trying to create at the ranch. Our goal is that we build lifelong relationships with our vendors because we will be working with them year after year and we want them to want to be at the ranch, and tell their clients about us.
Our community is a very important part of our business because we want and need their support. When our community experiences the ranch through our community programs or events they understand what the possibilities are for the space and can share with their networks and our exposure grows.
