We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mariah Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mariah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
Aspiring to be a Makeup Artist was the start to my creative journey, what I did not realize was what becoming a Makeup Artist consists of. Through social media is where I reach majority of clients, offering my services and promoting my craft. Early on I was only accepting clients on the weekends due to my 9-5 job during the week. One weekend I had a client scheduled for a full face glam, unfortunately I was not prepared for this client. Scheduling/accepting clients through social media allowed me to view customer profiles, this allowed me to view their skin tones and complexions. This specific client booked through a third party scheduling site I had recently incorporated in my booking process, but did not require a customer profile or uploading a photo for myself to view. The client arrived and I was completely stumped! I had never worked with client with such skin tone and texture! Although I was embarrassed as an artist, being transparent when offering services to customers is extremely important. The client and I decided to proceed with the service and make it work! I used and mixed the makeup products I had to pull the look together, and thankfully the client was very pleased. From that day forward, I made it a priority to do my research on color matching, compatible makeup products for women with certain skin types and textures, etc. For all creatives out there, create a plan for success and educate yourself in the craft or field your entering in, this will guarantee success!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Mariah Camille, A.K.A Face By MC. I am an Atlanta based Makeup Artist offering editorial and full face glam to all beauties in Atlanta! I work very closely with models, on photoshoot sets, and for clients requesting travel calls. Although I am a makeup artist, I ensure my clients are taken care of before and after the service; skin care cleansing and prep, as well as after care when Im working on photoshoot sets and with models. I started my makeup journey during my freshman year of college in my original hometown Cleveland, OH. I met a friend at my church who watched makeup and lifestyle videos on YouTube, capturing my interest in the beauty community. I am not where I want to be, but I am extremely grateful for how far Ive come. I am eager to continue educating myself in the makeup artistry world, and know I can continue to work hard to gain amazing opportunities! Feel free to visit my social media for beauty content and makeup services; @mariahcamille , @facebymc
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As a makeup artist, Im here to serve and satisfy. I myself enjoy looking and feeling beautiful, giving that feeling and look to my clients gives a high like no other. Some may say being a “people pleaser” is a negative thing, but not in my industry. I would say after finishing a face, spraying the misty setting spray to lock in the art I just created, handing my client the hand held mirror to see the final look, and my client smiling and posing is the best part of my job!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal as a Makeup Artist is to gain opportunities on set for fashion shows, campaign shoots, destination bridal parties, and or to land a permanent makeup artist role for a celebrity.
