Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mariah Germany. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Mariah, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Honestly, i believe we live in such an incriminating society. Cancel culture has shaken the industry. I truly do believe some people can come off a certain way contrary to what they’re trying to present. It can be from their music to their mindsets. Either way, there’s always going to be something someone can find not to like about someone. That’s why I’ve decided not to care what people think about me entirely. No one is liked by everyone, might as well be yourself, even if you’re misunderstood.
Mariah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, I am from Houston, Texas and I categorize myself as an r&b pop artist, but in a retro sense. Think 2000’s r&b meets, 1970’s pop. I love Donna Summer, Stevie Wonder, Rose Royce and I go dive into my Jill Scott, Beyoncé, and Usher. My mom named me after, you guessed it, Mariah Carey. It’s like she just knew. One of my main goals is to make “feel good” music. You know that feeling you get when you hear a certain song, a happy song. I want that for people who listen to my music. So many artist has made me so happy listening to their music, so an artist can really appreciate that. I’m most proud of learning to challenge myself. Everything doesn’t have to be perfect, and it won’t always be, and that’s okay. It’s all a learning experience.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Seeing people genuinely enjoy my music, and their support. Every time I perform, I love to scan the room and see people smiling at me and their reactions to my voice. It’s truly a beautiful thing. A beautiful feeling. I’m proud of myself for putting myself out there, I used to be terrified to sing, and that fear slowed me down. Once, I performed at my middle school choir concert and that’s when I knew that actually loved performing. The only thing that really made me a little insecure was the very opinionated thoughts of a certain person. But, I learned to excel against any unwarranted opinions. I am proud of myself for facing my fear and becoming comfortable in my craft.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
That the saying, “you’ll get a thousand no’s, before a yes”, is in fact, very true. As an artist, you can’t go into spaces with your hopes up, and that’s a sad reality. It’s very unfortunate, but you can have all the talent in the world, but it’s about if that’s what they’re looking for in an artist. Yet, that doesn’t mean don’t go in there as your true self. Do that every time. Be you, no matter what, and never doubt your gifts. There were so many times in the past, where I would go into studio sessions with popular artists, and I would be so nervous. I had to learn that, people appreciate authenticity and confidence. That’s what people like. I learned to unlearn, expecting a lot when giving a little.
