Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mariah Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Mariah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success is not a linear journey. True success is within the trials and tribulations you are able to overcome. My entrepreneurial journey began out of the comfort of my 2 bedroom apartment with a $25.00 griddle from target selling tacos. I quit my corporate job with Duke Energy during the pandemic to start a small restaurant concept called “Meals By Mariah” which originally focused on catering and meal preps. I wanted something more consistent, so I decided to start selling the tacos on a weekly basis. Within a year of quitting my job, my ghost kitchen concept took over the city of Charlotte. As I outgrew the ghost kitchen, my main goal was and will always be: “What’s Next?” By the grace of God, I was able to purchase a food truck and expand may concept into “Mariah’s Taco Spot.” The food truck is known as Charlotte’s Premier Food Truck for tacos. We’ve been featured on several local news platforms and social media platforms. We also purchased a 2nd food truck. My success journey started with very humble beginnings and I am so thankful that I can share my story with other potential/current business like myself.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Mariah Brown and I am the founder and owner of a popular restaurant concept in Charlotte, NC called “Mariah’s Taco Spot.” My restaurant and hospitality background began at the age of 16. With a variety of restaurant experience ranging from fast food to five-star dining, I was able to successfully create my own concept with confidence. Mariah’s Taco Spot is a food truck that provides the city of Charlotte, NC with “Birria Style” tacos as well as taco and wing combos that are out of this world. I am constantly thinking of new innovated ways to keep the community excited about their food experience with my concept. When I started my concept, my initial goal was to make sure it stood out within a pool of other food truck concepts. I wanted branding that was unique and different I wanted the food and the truck to be social media “post worthy.” I think it’s safe to say I’ve achieved my initial goal.
I am most proud of the growth Mariah’s Taco Spot has achieved within such a short time frame. The restaurant industry is very labor and mentally intensive. I’ve created standards that I refuse to deviate from as those standards make for a great customer experience. The customer will always remain at the forefront of my business structure. My concept has and will always cater to the customer. I am so excited to continue expanding within the city of Charlotte, NC.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media was and still is the pivoting factor of my business structures quick growth. Thanks to social media, I am able to connect with thousands of people across different social media platforms and market my product for a very low cost. I quickly grew my audience by creating engaging content for their enjoyment. I also take out the time to respond to all comments and messages so that my audience can feel a personal connection with me as the owner of the brand. I truly believe it is extremely important to connect with your audience online as much as possible. The best advice I can give on growing your audience online is to remain engaged as much as possible.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to quickly unlearn was that our journeys have a blueprint that we have to follow. I graduated from college with a Political Science degree with hopes of becoming an attorney. Whether or not we want to admit this, most people follow the script of “societal norms.” We are the ultimate creators of our realities. We have the full authority to create whatever life we want to live, not society. I pushed myself into a new mentality of limitless possibilities and I am so thankful that I did. I wanted freedom and peace of mind. I wanted to be in control of my own future. My unlearned lesson allowed me to have a safe space to create a reality that I could not imagine living without.
