We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mariah Arnett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mariah below.
Alright, Mariah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
I believe Corporate America views pet grooming to be like an assembly line where quantity is valued over quality. Pet grooming requires one to use dangerously sharp tools on a moving living target. We are almost always an inch away from disaster, which is why it is so important that we slow things down a bit. By slowing things down you are not only able to take your time and help a dog build confidence on the grooming table but you will greatly reduce your risk of injuring a pet. The Dog Shack LLC prides itself on being a calm one-on-one personal experience for dogs where we are able to take the time that is needed to keep dogs calm and comfortable.
Mariah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I entered the animal industry nearly 10 years ago working as a receptionist/vet assistant. After 4 years working in the veterinary medical field I really started to feel burnt out and decided to take a different career path in the animal industry. Combining my love for dogs and art I soon obtained my Pet Stylist Certification and in November of 2017, The Dog Shack LLC was born. The Dog Shack LLC is located at my family’s home where I provide personalized and kennel free one-on-one dog grooming. I firmly believe that grooming is just as much about forming a good relationship with a dog as it is about providing a beautiful haircut. By offering a stress-free environment and building strong bonds I am able to groom some anxious and senior pets that are not able to be groomed in a high volume grooming salon. We pride ourselves on offering only the best for your best friend!
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I would have known to utilize social media earlier in my creative journey. I thought of social media as strictly a place to advertise and gain clientele when it is in fact so much more useful than just that. In the last few years I’ve joined many facebook groups that have helped me tremendously in my grooming career, the most recent group being “grooming with kids” which was a lifesaver when I returned from maternity leave and started grooming with my son in the salon. Not only have I started joining groups but I have started connecting with other likeminded professionals all over the world and formed some great friendships along the way!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe the fact that I had years of experience in the veterinary medical field before I began grooming has really helped build my reputation within my field. Most of my clients are people I met through the veterinary field or they are clients referred to me from local veterinary clinics.
