We caught up with the brilliant and insightful MariaEsther Lovero a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
MariaEsther, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I am very happy as an artist. I have crossed many bridges in my life and actually due to extremely difficult circumstances I held a regular job, it was a very important job however, I had to learn to follow days and hours schedules I was not used to and yes, throughout the years. this regular job became one of the most important, rewarding and uplifting jobs I’ve ever had. It taught me the real meaning of being an artist and how to provide a service I’ve never imagine I had the capacity to do so.
As an artist, I had the privilege to perform in many stages of South America, Europe and United States but, as I mentioned before due to extreme and dangerous circumstances, I had to flee the country where I was born and start all over again. At that time, I chose to live as near the ocean as possible and so I bought my condo in South Beach walking distance from the water. Those were dark time and for over a long period of time I was not able to do anything else but healing, yes, I needed to heal myself and I did.
During that period, that impasse in my career I thought a lot about my art and what was I going to do with it and it was then when I decided to go to school at night, become an Early Childhood Educator and work with children. Little did I know that that decision would make me so happy! I was working with children teaching music, creative movement, theatrical expression while studying at night, after my graduation, I enrolled in a Yoga school, and I became a Certified Yoga Instructor, also I took Art classes and little by little I became an Enrichment Program Specialist. At one point I was offered the whole department of Early Childhood in a private school in Miami and soon I signed a contract to offer my services in a Center for Autism and Special Education also in Miami. One year later, I was awarded Outstanding Therapeutic Specialist for Music & Art.
So, you asked me about a regular job? All I can say is this, life is unpredictable and we have to be open to the signs that it provides; never say “That is not for me” or think that if we don’t do what we think we should be doing and it doesn’t work out that is the end of the world, because it is not, on the contrary, it could be one of the most important things that can happen in your life. Something we can learn so much from and still be an artist, because to live in itself, is an art and we have to learn to accept it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I come from very humble beginning and have a very difficult childhood, very traumatic and lot of abuse. For the sake of destiny, I was able to take some dancing and singing lesson, learnt to play guitar and music became a very important part of my life, also I study English language, I didn’t like it, I was forced to do so and I did it.
Little did I know what was in store for me and that as a teenager I was going to be offered to work in a television show dancing with a group of other teens and that this show will become one of the most watched shows in television.
Withing a year a became a teen idol, signed contract with RCA, tour with my band all over South America and four year later I will sign the contract that will bring me to perform in United States. It was Christmas in New York, and I just couldn’t believe it was me on that stage performing for so many people. It was magic, it was rewarding, overwhelming and I was grateful.
Who would have thought of that introverted young girl, abused and neglected by her mother, who had absolutely nothing and no one to lean on would become an artist and in 1974 she would performing in New York city?
From that moment on I knew I had to study, work on my craft as an artist and so I enrolled in the theatre of Puerto Rican actress and director Miriam Colon, I took jazz dance classes and continue with my performances. in different venues throughout the city, Queens, the state of New Jersey and so forth.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me being an artist is a gift and when you are famous like me, you/I know I have a greater responsibility on how do I treat that gift, also because there are thousands of people who would want to be like me and of course it is very rewarding to see all this people who write to you, go to the concerts to see you, they imitate you and therefore you become a role model for them. A good one or a no so good one. I learned that at a young age and more and more become part of my life as an artist to make sure that I would represent that idol they loved so much. I took my job very seriously because it is and because by doing so, I became a better person someone I can feel proud of.
Sometimes people say to me, “oh you are so serious and so dedicated to your work, don’t you get bored?” and my answer is absolutely no, I get to do what I love, why would I get bored? Why wouldn’t I dedicate time to make it better? To me, that is no brainer and also because throughout my career of fifty four years, I still have people who contact me through social media in a daily basis and tell me how proud they are they chose me as their favorite artist, not only for the good of my craft as a singer, actor, producer and director but for being able to pursue it with principles and dignity. To me, there is nothing more rewarding than that.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Throughout the years I became more and more involved in my career, I learned that studying the craft would make me better and better knowing that eventually it would have an impact not only not only in my audience or in me as an artist but fundamentally in me as a person. I know you may ask what studying and perfecting your craft has do with you as a person? Well, it does for by doing so you develop an insight of responsibility, commitment and love for what you chose to do, which not always comes easy but to me it is all worth it.
Today 2025, most of my dreams have come true. Together with my husband and business partner Marc we own a production company, small but ours and because of this I can continue making my own decisions; I hire who I consider has the same principles and respect for their work as I do. I write, produce and direct my own podcast titled Exploring Together, in 2023 I wrote, produced and directed my own bilingual documentary titled “Argentina, country where I was born”, write and record my own songs and I am in the process of finishing and self-publish my memoires. 2026 is yet to come and I am preparing for a new challenge, I am about to join Toastmasters International, and I am preparing to go life using my own voice through “The Art of Parenting” own conferences.
I am grateful at everything and everyone I have encounter on my path. Also grateful to entrepreneur Leandro Curcio for his trust and recommendation for this interview and I am thankful to David Tan who through Canvas Rebel is giving me the opportunity to tell my story.
If there is anything I can tell anyone reading this right now, this is it “Be mindful to yourself and others, life is precious don’t waste it. Find something you love doing, pursue it and perfect it, be true to your values, develop strong work ethics, do no harm, have a purpose, be grateful and happiness would always be at your feet. Full circle.
