We recently connected with Maria Vargas and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Maria thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
6/26/2016 I found myself in the hospital in ICU and just days before I was on vacation having a great time with my family. My left lung was full of fluid and there was no explanation for it. Ten days in ICU, in and out of the hospital for 6 months and in the process had two surgeries to my left lung and the fluid kept coming back. The surgeon told me the only option left was to cut off my left lung and a few more surgeries in the process. My family and friends kept praying and the moment I was going to have the final surgery The Lord healed me. During this process I learned the importance of having life insurance and specifically the one that covers you while you are alive. My life changed and I decided to learned more about it. I got my license to sell insurance and ever since I have being helping families get protected.
Maria, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born in the Dominan republic and arrived in NY when I was 9 years old. Went to school and my passion was nursing. I wanted to be a nurse since I was a kid. Became a nurse and moved to Florida. Worked in nursing homes, hospital and home health. Loved my job but The Lord had a different plan for me. After I became sick and learning about insurance I was not sure for a long time of what I wanted to do but I new there was more. I sold insurance part time and continue with nursing full time until I was moved to start taking care of elderly in my house. Yes you heard that right. The Lord has a sense of humor. I opened an assisted living for 6 patients and the journey has being amazing. I was able to quit my nursing job and focus on the elderlies and insurance. Now I’m building a book of business in life and health insurance in order to build a large home for elderlies that are in need of a good loving home. My passion is to give back therefore I decided to build the insurance in order to take care of the elderly.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When my husband and I decided to take in the first patient into our home it was a very hard decision. Just imagine this patient was in hospice, total Bed bound and the person that was caring for the patient was 90 and the patient was 93. We struggled with the decision but we asked the Lord for guidance and He gave us the green light. Within a week a get a call with a second patient and I had not told anyone I was doing this. We found ourselves in our home and we didn’t fit in the home. We decided to rent a house for my husband and I and we were going to leave the patients in our old house. The moment came that we had to signed a lease and out big question was, how are we going to pay all this rent and bills? That was a moment that changed our life forever. We trusted the Lord again and moved forward. Within a couple of weeks of renting our new home I get a call from the hospital with a young man 48 years old that didn’t have a place to go and was in his last days. That day I understood what The Lord was doing through me.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Yes I would do it all over again. Nursing is very fulfilling. And as an insurance agent to be able to give peace of mind to a family is an amazing feeling.
