We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maria Ramirez-Adams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maria below.
Hi Maria, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
I embrace new technology & tools. When video was added to the digital camera I was hooked & have been incorporating video in all my shoots. I pushed myself to learn more & get better by studying great cinematographers & directors. I feel the opportunity to share innovative portraits & stories is easy now with all the different online channels available. Instead of following trends I prefer to approach online media as an artist & find cinematic ways to create content. One example is from my collaberations with Mick Rossi, a musician (great guitar player), actor & writer, who I have photographed for several years & I created Video Portraits from one of our sessions. Now you can include that in a Reel or Short. Our collaberations has now lead into full video interviews & the latest is on his new band & album release for Mick Rossi’s Gun St.

Maria, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a fine art photographer I get to focus on projects I’m interested in & create portfolios of beautiful prints & multimedia films. I capture moments & I love going out with camera in hand documenting LA. I’m very excited about the the new multimedia video shorts I’ve created & share on my YouTube Channel spotlighting artists & events such as the open house of Pachuco Supply, featuring artisan hat maker Gilberto Marquez & Cinthya Marquez who does the branding. I’ve been delveloping a series celebrating Chicano culture & the beauty of lowrider cars. I look forward to meeting more artisans & using my talents in photo & video in creating innovative content for them to share their story which is what I am doing with artist, Martin Pierce. I’ve been able to document his process of making his fine art bronze insect sculptures & we are currently working on a short film about his journey as an artist.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission statement as as artist is very simple. I see beauty, I create beauty, I share beauty. My aim is in finding moments that are part of a universal story. I love making beautiful fine art prints & films that share that.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
First I am not an influencer & I’m fine with that. I prefer more time off the phone so my advice is to focus on quality over quantity. I do go over my follower list & actually delete/block any account that looks like a bot or fake because that doesn’t help me. I prefer real life connections so when I go to an event & shoot I let people know where I will share the photos. I tag people when I can & its great when someone like that ends up following me because it becomes part of building a community. I use Instagram like its a phone book. I get to see who I might want to photograph & collaberate with. As a multimedia filmmaker I’ve been sharing my videos on YouTube & plan to keep building my channel. I haven’t had overnight success but I have notice a gradual increase in engagement with my videos so it does help to just keep creating & have fun trying new ideas.
