We were lucky to catch up with Maria Myraine recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maria Myraine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I hear the word “resilient” often when people try to describe me and I’ve caught myself describing who I am, as such, as well. When you look up the word in the dictionary, it defines “resilient” as “a person able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions.” And when I tell you that my bounce-back game is real (AF), I’m not exaggerating. Having overcome near-fatal experiences, multiple surgeries, debilitating depression, fear-inducing anxiety, and what seems to be endless odds, you can call me the bounce-back queen. But that, alone, isn’t my legacy. It’s my resilient spirit, my unwavering faith in God, and my willingness to get tf up every time life tries to knock me down.
For those who truly know me and my story/stories, I believe they’ll highlight not only how resilient I am, but how much passion I have for life despite what I’ve been through, and that I’m truly the embodiment of a warrior. And I hope to be remembered for my faith, my strength, and the inspiration I leave behind so other people can also realize their purpose and push through despite the odds.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I, Maria Myraine, am an accomplished digital marketing and media consultant/strategist who has a passion for fusing her love for culture with her expertise. I incorporate my deep appreciation for culture including fashion, literature, music, and sports, into my work – whether I’m spearheading a social media strategy, a digital PR campaign, sports editorial content calendar, or masterminding a digital content marketing plan.
I have established an impressive track record in elevating brands, public figures, and various companies to new heights, since graduating from St. John’s University in 2011 – including Tommy Boy Entertainment, Ski Beatz (BluRoc Records), Fat Beats Records (Clear Soul Forces), Simone G. Parker (KRS One’s wife), Obasi Jackson (Pop Smoke’s brother), Playstation and Deathrow Records via King Ice Jewelry, and more.
What I am most proud of is that I’ve learned, grown and accomplished so much as an independent consultant, never losing my willingness to learn and teach myself something new, my persistence in getting the work done on tight deadlines, small budgets and no assistance, and my passion for the work I do because I want to leave a positive mark in the culture.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Having spent the bulk of my career, thus far, in the Hip Hop and music side of the entertainment industry, I decided to take a gamble on my other passion in life — sports. Utilizing my journalistic and creative writing skills, I have been fortunate enough to marry my love for writing with my love for sports, especially basketball. Making the pivot from music to sports was tough at first because of all the effort and love I poured into it for the past 12+ years. But uncovering a new passion and pathway to my goals and dreams has been eye-opening, refreshing and necessary.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My character has undoubtedly helped build my reputation across the markets I serve as a consultant. At the root of everything, I know I’m a good person and will always exhibit the qualities of a good person in my work, and how I interact with clients, subordinates, peers, etc. Leaving people happy and satisfied with the work I’ve contributed to their campaigns, how I speak to people on phone calls and e-mails, how I acknowledge them in person, and how I’m always willing to lend a helping hand (because I know how it is when help isn’t easily accessible), have all contributed to my reputation. The results also speak highly of my work ethic and the quality I put in/out.
