We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maria Magdalena Suska a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maria Magdalena , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
Well after studying at Columbia College Chicago I started applying to hospitals in major cities like NYC, LA ,Chicago ect. It didn’t really matter to me where my opportunity lies as long as I got to work in my field. Miami was the first call back and I said let’s go! First I had to fly in to my interview. I was very nervous as I was about to graduate and really wanted to get this position. The recruiting process was very easy to be honest, and here I am still in Miami.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Cardiology nurse at Mercy Hospital in Miami, Florida. I have been at my practice for 4yrs now. I love all my patients and I give them the out most care that I am able to. I treat them all individually and make them feel like home away from home.
I provide 5 star nursing quality in all off Miami.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
The first thing you have to have if you want to be the best nurse possible is you have to really want to do it. You really have to want to be a nurse and not just bring people pills and plump pillows. To get there, you have to put in the hours and put in the study. There’s that little thing in you that tells you, ‘This is it,’.It makes learning all the other skills easier.
Also develop critical thinking skills, be comfortable with technology, practice communication, and prepare for the unexpected.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Well I can give you what helps me the most to cultivate your own resilience, start with some of the following strategies:
Build self-esteem by reminding yourself of your strengths and qualities.
Try to replace negative thoughts about a problem with positive ones.
Maintain a supportive social network of nursing colleagues. Talk to them about problems and make use of your combined experiences.
Try to be as flexible as possible in the face of change. Sudden changes, in particular, can seem very disruptive. Try wherever possible to see positives in the change.
Develop positive thinking and optimism. A ‘can-do’ attitude helps you to see problems clearly and act appropriately.
Pay attention to your own needs. Nursing is a demanding profession and it is vital that you care for yourself, as well as caring for your patients.
Take action to solve problems as soon as they are encountered. The problem probably isn’t going to go away, and the longer you leave it the more stressed you will feel.
Set reasonable goals to deal with problems. Break problem-solving down into small manageable steps. Experiment with, and use, a range of problem-solving strategies.
Above all, remember that many
problems that nurses face in their daily work are the result of organisational weaknesses or failures. Try not to feel responsible for situations that are beyond your control.
