We were lucky to catch up with Maria Lugo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maria , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
How do I start! The reason I am a Nail Technician comes from my loving and supporting mother. She always believed in me and always told me anything was possible; as long as I did it with love and faith. Everything started back home in Puerto Rico where she helped me open my first nail salon. Minnie’s nails! It went amazing! Not to mention the love that I developed in helping woman and being a great listener. I also love being able to change someone’s day by just polishing their nails or doing a great pedicure. This job has changed my life. Everyone that comes in to my door is a true blessing in my life. When I started working here in Atlanta where I live now, I had an amazing boss that helped me gain great clients also introduced me to celebrities ect. Now I own my own business here in Atlanta and I love what I do. How I can help clients with their beauty needs and make everyone smile.. when you put everything you got in what you do, you then realize you’re in the right place doing what you do best!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Maria lugo, I am 48 years old. I’m from Puerto Rico. I have been doing nails for 22 years. I started back home and then moved to Atlanta where now I own my own nail salon. I got in to the nail industry because my mom believed in me and supported me all the way. Helped me open my first nail salon back home. She always said I had a gift. Meeting people talking to people and making people smile was my biggest power. She said take that and you will succeed in life.. I went to cosmetology school back home in Puerto Rico. Then moved here to Atlanta and got my Nail technician license. Work at a beautiful nail salon in Buckhead called Swatchbox beauty, where I learned discipline and how to be a boss lady. I learned from the best Raquel. She is my mentor and my amazing friend. Now in my salon I offer a variety of nail services like acrylic nails, manicure and pedicures. Natural nail care ect.. I also sell my own homemade sugar scrub. Is called Le scrub. Named it after my salon name, Le Posh Niall’s. There I’m a problem solver! I’m a private nails salon where my clients come to a one on one nail experience . with no rush or wait times as I dedicate the entire appointment to one client at a time. I’m very proud of my growth. The way my clients leave happy and are so excited to come back. I’m always looking to grow and expand. I’m making my next move soon as I plan to expand the business and employ nail techs that are willing to grow with me. Working on creating more followers and allow people to see me as an example that anything is possible in life. I want to be known as a nail technician that loves people and what she can do to make everyone happy.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Starting my own business has been very challenging but I have always been positive and never given up. There was times where I traveled to clients home and did services at their home. I try accommodating clients needs. Not thinking about anything else but how to grow and succeed in this industry. This is how I have manage to meet new clients and made them my regular clients. Never giving up and always working harder towards my goal.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What has helped build a good reputation in this market is having great customer service. Making sure all my clients are well taken care of, listened and always knowing what’s best for them. In this industry not only do you do nails or provide beauty. I’m also the person that listens to them, gives advice, mentors, hugs, laughs, and cries if needed but most of all letting clients now I’m always here for them has being my biggest and greatest outcome. And maybe super power!
