We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful María Gabriela Rondón. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with María Gabriela below.
Alright, María Gabriela thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I believe my parents have been a fundamental part of my upbringing, giving me the foundation to understand that only through hard work and honesty can you achieve anything you set your mind to.
My father taught me that with strategy, dedication, perseverance, and doing good, you can build an empire even if you have nothing initially. From him, I also learned the importance of connecting with others and seeing opportunities and lessons in everyone. As well as, when you achieve your goals, not to forget where you come from and to help everyone you can.
MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME THAT LOVE CAN REALLY MOVE MOUNTAINS, THAT IF TODAY YOU HAVE A BAD DAY, TOMORROW YOU GET UP, DRAW A SMILE ON YOUR FACE AND TRUST IN GOD AND IN YOUR TALENT THAT WILL TAKE YOU WHERE, MAYBE YOU DON’T IMAGINE… FROM HER I ALSO LEARNED THE VALUE OF UNITY AND THAT SEVERAL PEOPLE CAN DO MORE THAN ONE
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Ever since I can remember, I’ve felt a deep connection to stories—to the emotions behind every word and the power of communicating what others feel but don’t know how to express. That’s how I began my journey in the world of communications: with the desire to give people a voice, to connect, to tell meaningful stories.
Today, I have the privilege of working as a reporter for Univision 45 in Houston, Texas. Every day, I wake up before dawn with a mission: to inform, to be where the news happens, to listen to people and share their reality with respect and integrity. I don’t just carry a microphone—I carry the responsibility of representing my community’s stories and making them seen and heard.
What sets me apart is not just my passion for journalism, but the way I live it. I connect, I care, I get involved. For me, every story has a face, a context, and a feeling. And my job isn’t done until I make the audience feel it too.
Beyond my professional life, I’m a woman who has faced real challenges, who has learned how to stay grounded in the storm, who keeps showing up with strength and heart. Even while being far from home and my loved ones, I continue to believe in the power of communication—as a bridge, as a refuge, and as a tool for transformation.
This is who I am: a journalist, a woman, a daughter, and a committed voice for truth and the humanity behind every story.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The greatest proof of resilience I can share from my experience is having unwittingly become an immigrant. In 2016, I was forced to leave my country, Venezuela, and since then, I have been a political asylum seeker in the United States. Nine years have passed since I was able to set foot in my country, but beyond that, I have not seen my mother, siblings, aunts, uncles, and nephews again. I think that has been the greatest pain, but also the drive to continue conquering spaces that make me and my family feel proud, and beyond that, that this journey called life, despite the circumstances, will always be worth it.
God is always with us.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
That starting over will always be an option even if you think you have already achieved complete success, in 2021 I quit my job and lost absolutely everything at once… life taught me that even if you think you have nothing, you have life and you have God, so you can rebuild everything again… the fight only ends with death
