We were lucky to catch up with Maria DeVivo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maria, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve always known I wanted to write. Ever since I was a little kid and could pick up a crayon. My dad was a master storyteller, and he made up the best stories. I knew early on that I wanted to emulate that. Growing up, I wrote poetry, short stories, attempted many novels, but life always seemed to derail my dream of being published.
After I had my daughter in 2009, I felt like I had accomplished all the “life goals” I had set for myself. All but one. In the summer of 2010, I completed the first draft of my first novel – something I had dreamed of doing since I was young.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m originally from Long Island, NY; I came to the Tampa Area in 2005. I’ve been an English teacher since 2000 (middle school – yes, I’m a glutton for punishment).
I’ve always wanted to be a writer. For as long as I could remember, I’ve wanted to walk into a bookstore, point to a shelf and say, “I wrote that.” My imagination has always been both deep and wide and I knew early on that writing would satisfy my literary tentacles.
I’m also a horror nerd. I live in that dark, goth-y world of music, fashion and film. My love of all things macabre and weird began at the tender age of 3 when my mother took me to see the movie “Creepshow.” In her defense, she thought I was sleeping the whole time, but I most certainly was not. That fascination and curiosity toward the unknown was imprinted on me that night, and is relevant in my work as an author.
I dabble in the fantasy and horror genres where I tell tales of dark elves, and zombies, and angels and demons, and witches (just not all in the same place!) and if there’s one thing you need to know about my work, it’s that I’m a sucker for the bad guy.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
This is going to sound so cliche, but when someone tells me that they connected with something specific from one of my books, it gives me such a rush. Like, I know I did something right! Of course, getting positive feedback is a wonderful feeling because I’m so proud of all my “babies,” and the fact that someone would actually take the time out of their own life to read something *I* created still blows my mind to this day. But when someone says, “I really connected with so-and-so,” or “I felt so-and so’s pain at that point,” hits different. It takes that conversation to another level, and to hear someone analyze and break down my work beat for beat is so rewarding to me.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I just want to keep writing. Keep telling crazy, messed up stories that make people cringe and smile at the same time. I want to share my distubing visions with the world and make people keep coming back for more. This went from a dream, to a hobby, to a side-hustle. Ultimately, I would like for it to be my one and only job. So, the goal is to be able to support myself with my dream!
