We recently connected with Maria Cortes Graham and have shared our conversation below.
Maria, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success can be measured in different ways by different people: fame, wealth, or a successful business. Success, for me, means having a good reputation and a thriving business; financial success will naturally ensue. My success came after many years of hard work, discipline, and persistence. Hard work and, at times, sacrifices are always a part of any successful story.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I began my career as a foreign language coach. In that role, I gained a deep understanding of my students’ challenges and blockages and developed my interpersonal skills. Upon moving to the US and noticing a lack of demand for foreign language instruction, I decided to transition into coaching, drawing on my background in yoga and meditation. After that, I began working at a large corporation, where I helped employees navigate their daily challenges, such as stress, feeling overwhelmed, lack of physical movement, monotony, and being on auto-pilot. My one-on-one sessions have become increasingly popular due to the personalized attention and application of all my skills and expertise. After more than ten years, I gained firsthand experience of corporate life and its impact on the employees. A year ago, I decided to stop working for others and expand my private practice. Best decision ever!
Over the past year, I have assisted high-profile individuals and business owners in growing their careers and live more fulfilled lives. My students (I don’t use the word “clients”) have been with me for several years, and we can see their progress. The goal is to raise awareness, notice patterns, identify blockages and obstacles, and learn new ways of thinking, choosing, and doing.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Having a solid social media presence is crucial for success. I am fortunate to have my daughter helping me; she is a marketing and social media guru. I have started by defining my brand, including colors, fonts, templates, and logos, and developing a voice that connects with my audience ( who are they?) As I moved forward, I made changes based on the audience’s response and engagement. Second, a clear and authentic message. What message do I want to convey? What is my authentic voice? Lastly, consistency is critical. I share content on specific days, set times, and particular subjects relative to my main topic. This keeps the audience looking forward to new material and engaging by asking questions and responding to comments.
I recommend creating accounts on almost all platforms.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
As an avid reader and now a YouTuber, I both create and consume content. As a business owner, there is always something new to learn – whether it’s new technology for my YouTube videos and social media content, or better information for coaching, yoga, and meditation. Being updated is crucial to staying relevant, so I make sure to constantly read and stay informed. I have too many great books to recommend; sometimes I recommend them on my social media.
