We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maria Banda a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maria, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Well the story behind my business name Mariposa which means Butterfly. You know how the butterfly has a life cycle well I fealt I was chrysalis for a while and then became a butterfly my self when I decide to open up My business. I went through a phrase that had me stuck for a while with my son having compromised health issues. Growing and spreading my wings is what a butterfly does.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Maria I’m a mama of five kiddos. I decided to open Mariposa January of 2021. Something I always had in mind to do until I took the courage to do it. After my son’s health issues had subsided after his bmt transplant I did it because it doesn’t matter when you do it as long as you do. I started designing personalized wood pieces. And slowly all my ideas flourished. With my hard work I decided I would expand with getting myself a laser and now I offer laser cutting and engraving. I tell my customers give me your idea and I will bring it to life. Seeing there reaction when they see there orde is what makes me continue to do my best.
What sets me aside from others is that I focus on your order I won’t make anything with out approval and are happy with the design. I am able to personalized most of my designs.
I’m most proud because I had the courage to open Mariposa all while raising my five kids thanks to the support I have from my husband.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Well opening a business was something I had planned when I decided to take a step down and be a SAHM to care for my kids specially my oldest one he had a medical condition and had various specialist doctors visits. I didn’t open my shop then because I felt I wouldn’t not be able to keep up. August 2019 my son had a bone marrow transplant then covid hit. December 2020 I decided I will open up My business January 2021. I came up with a name I decided what I wanted to design wood. I learned to design on a design space. My resilience on not giving up even with all the obstacles that got on my way slowly my shop is growing with all the support of my followers.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I’ve unlearned is not give up don’t give up on your dream on your vision because it takes courage to do it even when you think the impossible. Specially with trying to grow a business and still attend your kids to be present for them.
