We were lucky to catch up with Maria Baldwin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maria, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
I am the artist behind Resin Vibes by MB. I specialize in resin wave art, floral preservations and functional art. Being the artist, media manager, accountant, photographer and designer of my brand is what sets me aside from big corporate. I create one of a kind pieces for all my clients. From coasters, charcuterie boards, floral blocks, tables, earrings…etc they’re all unique! Nothing is replicated. Clients come to me because what I make is something they can not purchase in big name brand stores. That’s my biggest accomplishment and advantage that separates me from other businesses. I also make it personal. I meet my clients. I listen to their requests and we create the perfect piece of art together.
Maria, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I been a Respiratory Therapist for 9 years at my local hospital. I had my second child during the pandemic and during that time my job and personal life were very stressful. I ended up dealing with postpartum depression. So I decided to do things that brought me joy. I picked up my notebook and started drawing again. I’ve always been artistically gifted. I was a painter in my childhood. Art has always brought me joy. I decided to experiment with resin after watching a video on social media. Then I was immediately hooked and wanted to improve my new skill. Slowly this new hobby became a business and I absolutely love it.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Yes, my side hustle did turn out to provide more income than my actual career. To be honest, I never thought that my art would take off. However, I’m thankful it has. I still work at the hospital, but only part time. I stopped working full time and overtime. My small business has brought me so much joy., personally and financially. I can make money working from home. I now get to enjoy my kids. Be there for the holidays, baseball games, dinner with my kids and husband. It’s fantastic!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy that has worked for my business is actually putting my self out there. Joining local markets, local shops and social media. Most of my clients are regulars now. I met during craft shows and they find me on social media. They simply message me and place an order through my website.
