We recently connected with Marhia Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Marhia , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
The first risk I took that was life changing was making the decisions to have my oldest son at the age of 17. I knew that this will be an extremely scary experience. But I was able to persevere through the hard times and look at how much of a blessing this was. My oldest son was actually the motivation for me to start my hair business. I was in college but I was struggling to provide because I was a full time student. I started to do my friend’s hair in college and then my business started to grow. I took a another big risk by starting my own business versus getting a job in my field. But my son believed in me which allowed me to continue on, until now I’m able to provide a different lifestyle for my boys just by taking a risk.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I was a freshman in college when I started to do my friends hair, everyone loved her hair and wanted to get their hair done by me. I started at just doing 5 clients a week to 15 clients a week until I was completely booked for months in advance. I love that I provide different protective styles for my clients that will help their natural hair grow while looking beautiful at the same time. What makes me different from others is how fast I work, the quality of my services and how I have “growing hands.” Everyone person that sits in my seat is amazed how I exceed their expectations. I take pride in my work and putting a smile on my clients face!
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
My main business allowed me to invest into purchasing property with my husband. We have been able to purchase several properties out in Cleveland, Ohio. We even sold a apartment complex within a month of purchasing it. We’ve also purchased a fourplex in Houston, Tx. Which allows us to create residual income from that property alone. We also have a business with Turo, we have 4 vehicles listed on the site which allows us to be free of car notes and insurance plus make profit from our cars. The biggest lesson I learned is having multiple streams of income allows you to build wealth faster, compared to you putting all your eggs in one basket. You learn to work smarter not harder.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy I used for growing a large clientele base is referrals. After finishing my clients hair I will let them know to inform anyone they would think would love to get their hair done by me. My clients who were regulars I would give them a discount if they sent a referral or a surprise gift. Building a loyal client will allow you to establish a great business relationship with your clients.
