We were lucky to catch up with Marguerite Anglin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marguerite, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I Started painting 10 yrs ago as a self taught artist. I had this overwhelming desire to paint this cloudy sky from my window one day. I didn’t have any art supplies in the house, and I hadn’t painted anything since I was a kid. Yet I wanted to paint the sky, for everyone to see the beauty I saw in those ordinary gray clouds with the sun peeking through. It felt like a dare from God – I heard him say in my spirit “Go for it, go buy some art supplies, and paint that sky, take them to church and paint in front of everybody tonight during service”. And I had this argument with God- like “no- thats crazy… I don’t know how to paint and I don’t even have supplies!!” But He was insistent so I decided to listen. I took a leap of faith and I bought art supplies and took them to church with me that evening and set up in the back of the room. I didn’t ask permission, I just started painting as people were worshipping. The work was NOT pretty! But people came up and told me how blessed they were. That night was when the light was turned on inside of me and I realized I had a passion for creating art that inspires people.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Have you ever had a crazy idea and decided to just go with it? That’s how it was for me when I discovered I had a love and talent for painting. I’ve always appreciated art, but I never would have considered myself an artist until I stepped out in faith. One day in 2013, I found myself inspired by the view of the sky from my window and felt like God was daring me to paint it. I hadn’t painted anything since I was a kid, and as an adult I didn’t even own any art supplies! But I listened to that inner voice, took a trip to the art store, and decided to try painting that sky. My first attempts weren’t pretty, but it was just the start of my journey. That day an artist was born, and 10 years later, the sky is still my most favorite thing to paint.
As a mixed media artist and visual storyteller, I create sky inspired paintings that evoke a sense of wonder and joy. I love to use traditional and non-traditional painting methods such as finger painting, to create art that cultivates hope. Fingerpainting takes me back to when I was a kid and it was okay to color outside the lines. My first full art collection released in 2019, “Above the Clouds,” is a series of atmospheric, abstract finger paintings that prove even the clouds have stories to tell. My second collection released in 2022, “An Invitation to Wonder” combines finger painting with traditional brush painting and celebrates the child inside us all.
My art is a reflection of my talks with God and each painting is an invitation for others to join the conversation. My desire is for my art to be a bridge and an open door for people to experience the love of God through my art. In addition to painting, I have a passion to unlock the artist in everyone and I host workshops and gatherings to encourage people to return to their first love- “Creativity”.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I make art because I believe it has the power to heal. There’s something about art that sneaks past defenses and opens people up to new ideas. I aspire to create paintings that cause people to hope again and consider the possibilities of what could be. When my fingers touch the canvas, I envision my paintings touching the heart of the viewer, leaving indelible prints on their soul…or at least making them joyful! My goal is to remind people that hope and healing are closer than they may think, and to never lose their sense of wonder.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, creativity flows best when I let go of striving and performance and stop being so hard on myself. I enjoy the process of creating the most when I stop focusing on technique and make up my own rules, like I did when I started fingerpainting all those years ago. I believe I was created to create, and we all were created to create something unique that only we can contribute to the world around us. The most rewarding part of being creative is the freedom in just being myself and who I was created to be, and realizing that is more than enough.
