Hi Margrit Erika, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
As the Owner and Creator of Flexeclass which is a home-based online English tutorial company based in the Philippines, I’ve learned to maximize the use of technology in class to help language learners to reach their goal. Throughout my career, I’ve been selected as a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert, Google Certified Educator Level 1, Apple Teacher and National Geographic Certified Educator for showing expertise in the use of edtech tools in my class and connecting my lessons based on the learning framework of these companies.
In addition, I’ve also created the Learn English through Movement Series to teach yoga and pilates to schools worldwide to help students relax in between breaks and avoid computer syndrome.
Margrit Erika, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started teaching English in our university’s language center as a student tutor to South Koreans back in 2002. It was my first experience helping foreign students advance their English skills and I felt really good knowing that I can make an impact in another person’s life and vice versa. Since then I was hooked in teaching the language until a friend of mine encouraged me to offer classes online. Through word of mouth, my business has flourished worldwide. Nowadays, I have clients as far as Chile.
What products do we offer?
Flexeclass offers online English tutorial services to ESL and EFL students worldwide. We teach different courses such as Conversation English, Kids English, Business English, Travel English, Legal English, Job Interview and Learn English through Movement (a yoga or pilates class)
What sets me apart from others?
My thirst for learning and professional development to better help our students as well as our unique course offering. With my 22 years of teaching experience, I’ve been selected as a National Geographic Certified Educator in which my capstone video has received exemplary rating in all categories, a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert, a Google Certified Educator Level 1 and an Apple Teacher.
In addition, I am also the Creator of Learn English through Movement Series, a specially designed yoga and pilates class for ESL and EFL learners to help them improve their listening and motor skills by following movement cues and learning different body parts in English.
What are you most proud of?
Being featured on national television to talk about my work in education and our capstone video being posted in the National Geographic Learning Catalogue as guide to other educators.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth! Thanks to our students who never get tired of recommending us to their family and friends, we have to do minimal effort in social media marketing.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
As a business owner and sole breadwinner of our family, I have to stay organized in order to juggle between my business and personal life. In the past, my job was fully home-based so I can easily manage my work in the morning and take care of the housework in the afternoon or evening. Nowadays, the inflation rate is too high so I also work in the pilates studio in the afternoon.
