We were lucky to catch up with Margitu Adamo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Margitu, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I believe taking risks are you listening to your intuition and being true to yourself. It’s only considered a risk because it isn’t ideal, temporarily.
I’ve given myself a new turn in life, and a new outlook. My entire life I thought I was going to be in the health field, go to medical school and become a surgeon. I used this goal as an excuse to dismiss myself. After loads of unsuccessful triumphs in school and not receiving the results that mirrored my efforts, etc.
Although, I indulged in side hobbies outside of my studies. During freshman year I began drawing portraits and faces, that same year I started a makeup company and started commissioning art. I also started a youtube and built out my dorm to be a mini studio, that now has 100k subscribers and a total of 7+ million views. During sophomore year I began customizing shoes and clothing, creating commissions, you name it. I began my art company for commissions and social presence. Junior year I began a tattoo apprenticeship, which I’ve recently just completed. And senior year, I now consider myself an artist. All these hobbies alongside school caused me to invest the last of the little money I was making into these crafts. Each of these crafts was successful, my results were mirrored by my efforts. I’ve learned more about myself than ever pursuing this rather than what I was. (Although I still completed my degree).
Taking risks is how I got to where I am today, and I believe everyone should.
Margitu, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I had mentioned an apprenticeship underneath who was currently my tattoo artist. I didn’t know anything about tattoos or the art world, I just like beginning new “projects”. I waited for that current semester to be over and began that summer. I first drew and practiced over different mediums of art for months before even touching a tattoo machine. I worked endless hours 6 days out the week, missed special events, and sacrificed my social life, all for this new venture that was never in the plan. I continued this apprenticeship for 2 years and have recently just received my license. This was the toughest thing I’ve accomplished, as well as completing my degree in the same beat. I had to master discipline, time management, money management, and really every life skill there is in order to balance life. I am most proud of that. As I’m reaching the end of these tasks and look back, I realized that while I was in the moment I didn’t know how much I was doing.
I am currently a tattoo artist and student. I am grateful for everything I’ve learned over the last couple of years, as I now feel like I accompany what it takes to complete bigger goals in the future.
In the future, I’d like to share what it took for me to get to where am at. I’ve dealt with a lot of challenges in the process and believe that it would be beneficial to share. I want to inspire others and share my experience. I want to be a speaker, write books, and study the human experience as a whole.
I want any work I do to embody the idea of sharing, understanding, and making anything beautiful through perspective. I don’t necessarily believe I will specify a career in my future, rather than just spreading a message and contributing to the greater good through the work I do.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
12 Rules for Life by Jordan B Peterson.
I was given this book at the perfect time. I was in Finfinee, a city in Ethiopia, and someone was selling books and handed me this one and I bought it. I read it throughout the trip, it was perfect for what I was going through in life and what I was experiencing on that trip. I made my decision to change courses of life while reading this book and being in that country.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
It was a number of devastating setbacks I faced throughout the last couple of years, it showed me life goes on and you have to keep going, life doesn’t slow down for anyone. You owe it to yourself to show up in your own life.
