We recently connected with Margie Marie and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Margie Marie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew that I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally during my senior year of college. I had the opportunity to intern with an international artist, who owned a local art gallery here in Savannah, GA. I saw the way that she infused creativity and business into a beautiful experience. Through this method she built other healthy relationships with local businesses in the city. What I observed gave me the confidence to incorporate the aspects of business I learned into a more translatable way to present my artwork. In this wonderful experience, I have embraced the trial and error of it all. There are lessons which continue to unfold for me as I develop and scale my business and vision.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Well, first I would like to thank your readers for taking the time to get to know me. It’s a pleasure to connect with you all. My name is Margie Marie and I’m a visual artist currently based out of Savannah, Georgia.I began exploring the world of visual arts around the age of 6. I have to say what really shaped my freedom of expression was the humongous support and encouragement I received form my father, school instructors, and others who motivated me to pursue art with a professional seriousness.
I eventually pursued a formal education in Visual Arts and this put me among my peers who shared that fervor for the creative arts that I held for so long. Being exposed to teachers who were further along the path also helped me to envision what a life filled with artistic pursuit could look like, and the viability of a dream transformed into a vision.
I would say my distinctive expression in art is a product of my formal training, personal intuitive artfulness, and spiritual perception. I see the deliberate design that the universe posesses and it further affirms the sacred notions I have about art.I have been fortunate to not be pigeon hold as an artist who only does one or two things but, rather I have witnessed my art standing on its own merits as an organic expression in itself. I see my pieces allowing people to connect, regardless or backgrounds, ethnicity, education level, or other boundaries. The pieces which I have been able to channel through me deliver a message and I have noticed a theme of consistent inspiration. The inspiring theme often centers around affirming the human spirits ability to evolve past external experiences of life and to seek ones own definition of themselves. The art that moves through me cultivates growth through the layered depth of meaning and value.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is witnessing individuals emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and collectively transcending from engaging with my art. I acknowledge that I am a vessel with the charge to reveal possibilities to others who may not be aware of the magnitude of human potential. Inspiring others towards their highest ideas is a humbling purpose, in my estimation. My reward comes from the fulfillment of being chosen to receive such a divine gift.
Have you ever had to pivot?
After graduating with my degree in Fine Arts, I realized I required some time to pivot into what I envisioned doing as an artist. I took on jobs as a community organizer and project manager within the Savannah community.
This move taught me the importance of being a well-rounded artist. Shying away from the business aspects and ability to coordinate people around the support of a show or even managing the back end of a show or production, can be detrimental to the growth of an artist.
It is just as important to learn marketing, project coordinating, soft skills, and proper accounting to build your brand and make your imprint in the world of art.
The key is to gather all of your cultural influences and experiences and like a good alchemist, turn those into ways to bring out the best in your work and, most importantly, yourself. Nothing you venture into is an act of vanity. It can all be incorporated into your craft.
