We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Margeaux Weith – Walker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Margeaux , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I was a hairstylist for over 20 years and was / still am very good at my job . It was very scary going from a creative and social job to a owner of a plumbing company . We started the company out of just becoming a blended family . We had to support 4 kids now and figure out how to do that and still be present in our kids lives . That was very important to us.
With money we won in a lawsuit we started the company with barely anything . In the beginning I was so scared if this new business was even going to work . Everything was against us. We don’t advertise at all , it was very hard getting clients , learning how to spread the word of our company , and how we value ourselves as a company. We are a honest company and we value treating our clients how we would like to be treated. We give you a time that we are going to show up , make sure we let you know when we are on our way . We treat our clients houses with the same respect as if it was our own.
Being a woman in a man’s run trade has been a bit difficult . I knew that would be a risk with changing trades . Lucky for me I gained respect and haven’t had too many problems
.
Since starting the company almost 6 years ago we have grown so much . We have a lot of our clients from when we first stared and continue to get referrals . Our clients are part of our work family and I think it shows. We are now going to hire another worker and we are booked a month in advanced.
What I learned from this is keep a positive attitude and if you want it you can make it happen. It’s a rough road but it worth it in the end.

Margeaux , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My business is different than other companies because of our craftsmanship and the way we treat our clients. We really value your home, time, and finances. As a woman I wanted to make sure that when we enter your home you feel safe. It’s always scary having strange people in your home and we show up in time, let you know when we are on our way, and clean up after we are done.
We do not mark up our materials when doing a project. I provide receipts with your invoice with detailed notes on the work that we did. I really think that helps with transparency.
I am very proud of my company being woman owned and relevant in the industry for almost 6 years and growing . Starting the company from nothing and taking that risk to provide for my family to me is a big deal.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most important way that we grew our clientele was the customer service we provide. It’s important to us to be transparent with the work we do and what we charge . We go beyond most plumbing companies for our clients. If you need water heaters replaced I will help select the right one for your home free of charge. If you need fixtures or appliances to be picked out I will do that as well, I like to make sure the brands we recommend and use have amazing customer service to ensure if anything happens down the line that you can get it replaced no problem and actually talk to someone.
Our quality of work also talks for itself . We have union trained plumbers that have the best training there is.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
At first I stared the company with money I won in a lawsuit. Literally I had $5000. I had to pay to incorporate my business. I take payments through Square . Square is what started to give me small loans. They saw how I was growing as a company though my invoices and payroll. The amazing thing with doing it that way is that each invoice paid a percentage is taken out to pay the loan so it makes my credit go up and I can have small bits of working capital.
