We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Margeaux Jordan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Margeaux below.
Hi Margeaux, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
My life has been a series of bold and daring risks in regard to my career. I may not be the type of gal to go skydiving or scale El Capitan, but I am always taking calculated risks in my field as a professional entertainer, screenwriter, actor, dancer, producer, and director.
The first big risk I took was taking off to L.A., leaving my small town in Florida, at 16 years old to be in a girl group that got signed to Island Def Jam Records under L.A. Reid. Years later, after the dismantling of the group and returning to Florida to study at the University of Florida, I shipped myself back to L.A. to audition for another girl group as part of a reality TV show for Europe/Asia. I booked it, packed my bags, and off I flew, alone, on my maiden voyage overseas, to Cebu, Philippines, to film this crazy show for a few months.
After starring on and creating all the music-driven content for one of the largest kids YouTube channels, a series of unfortunate events lead me to reinventing myself. I began Geaux Getter Productions, and with every nickel I made, I reinvested it back into getting better gear and, in time, created a wonderful business that has allowed me to both perform on camera and in the recording booth, but also produce, direct and edit behind the scenes.
Starting my own business was horrendously difficult. I lived on PB & J’s, ran in old sneakers, bundled in blankets as not to crank the electric bill, and limited my nights out with friends and my travels. I found ways to have fun on the cheap then. But it all paid off!
And now, after spending years of spare time and even taking off work from my client’s projects, I’ve created an arsenal of original screenplays, series, and unscripted reality series, that I’ve just began the process of pitching. I’m getting interest across the board and things are in the works, so I’m praying that everything works out exactly as it should! Faith plays a massive role in my life… hence, taking risks, or in other words, a leap of faith.
I’m so excited to see these stories come to life and make people laugh, sing, smile, feel moved, question their integrity, and just lead a more wholesome, loving and happy life.
Margeaux, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey there! My name’s Margeaux Jordan, and I am on a mission to make timeless, clean, captivating, and feel-good entertainment.
So what’s my story? I’m a multi-hyphenate creative – actress, singer-songwriter, dancer, screenwriter, director, video & audio producer, and editor. I know it seems a bit excessive, but I’m the type that has always been in love with all elements of creating captivating content, from coming up with the idea and pre-production to performing and producing the final product! I’ll take you through the highlight reel.
I was the creative director, producer, writer, and on-camera talent for one of the largest kid’s YouTube channels. Videos under my creative direction and performance brought in 500 million views (and counting). And I launched the channel’s music-driven content and sketch comedy series, which are now on Amazon Prime. I recently wrapped a 44-episode interactive kid’s series for National Geographic and Disney, where I was the co-host, actor, and contributing writer. I’ve had multiple record deals, including one with Mercury/Island Def Jam Records, under LA Reid and David Massey. I even went on to be in another girl group for a reality series aired in Europe and Asia called “No Grey Skies.” You can spot me in dramatic and comedic films, shows, web series, and pilots. I worked with director Adam Shankman on the movie musical “Rock of Ages.”
I’ve background danced for music artists, including (my favorite) Pitbull, Wisin y Yandel, and more. I also danced on the Dazzlers dance team during my tenure at the University of Florida. Currently, I’m singing and recording all the female vocals for the “Blippi” albums and the Moonbug Entertainment series “Linkimals.” I run my video and audio production company, where I do everything from performing on camera and editing the video and audio content. I’m addicted to the Adobe Creative Suite! I’ve filmed over 100 commercials, my favorite maybe when I played a “period” – yes, like the time of the month, for Ruby Love, or when I was “Mother Nature” for a Truvani spot, both with the incredible Harmon Brothers team! And finally, what I am most excited about, is that I’m about to start pitching my music-driven screenplay, one of multiple scripts I have in the vault, that I’ve been penning for some time but are finally ready to be revealed!
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I don’t have a single relative in the entertainment industry. I didn’t have any connections to get me into any rooms. Although I was very supported by my loved ones, I was certainly the black sheep in the sense that, I’ve chosen a very uncertain path. I’m blessed to say that I’ve now been working full time in the entertainment industry for 7 years, no side hustles, no forgoing morals and integrity to pay the bills. I was always aware that this world and this business especially is about “who you know,” but I was maybe a bit naive, or delusional, to think that just my hard work and talent alone would get me anywhere.
Someday I will tally up the unanswered phone calls and emails to agents, production companies, managers, casting directors, you name it. I will tell you that nearly every legitimate contact does not allow any “unsolicited” materials or pitches. So, when you’re someone like me who didn’t have the contacts and was shut out from nearly every single person I tried to reach, it was so, so frustrating. This business is entirely subjective… it’s not like say a professional golfer’s life who, when they are on the course, they play their own game, shoot whatever they shot based on their performance, and placed where they rightfully placed. No, in entertainment, you not only have to know and get into the right rooms, but also have to convince them that you’re “the one” for them. I have spent years feeling stifled and trapped, but I kept resilience and did every single thing I could to try to get in touch with people to just get me in the room so I could show them what I’ve got!
I’m still trying to knock down doors, and it’s very scary, especially being a screenwriter, where my work has been repeatedly ripped off, just enough that I couldn’t take legal action. You live in a state of paranoia and persistence… And so then one asks, why do it?! The answer is simple: because I love it. I love the feeling entertainment brings to my soul. I love the instant vacation it takes me on. I love creating out-of-the-box ideas, and getting on sets and forming a true family and bond with the people you work with, I love the impact it can make on people, and I want to leave a lasting impact. I want to entertain and make people feel something. When I think back on the four months I spent filming a kid’s series for National Geographic and Disney, it was the happiest four months of my entertainment career. My fellow co-host, Albert, was an incredible human and hysterically funny, and the crew and team behind it were the kindest, most driven and down-to-earth people. We had to be scrappy at times. We became family. I cannot wait to star in and produce my creations, collaborate with other wonderful, gifted people, and make timeless content!
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I’ve been OBSESSED with the content being pumped out my Studio Binder. Their YouTube channel is a MUST for any screenwriter and even actor, producer, animator, etc. I’ve rented countless books from the library, but nothing compares to the insights they’ve got on their channel. It’s so well done. I’m a better writer because of Studio Binder!
