We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maresa Talbert. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maresa below.
Alright, Maresa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
Let me just start by saying that I believe family businesses are God’s primarily-intended design for wealth building. That’s why, historically, people had such large families. They needed help farming the land and tending to the flock. Believe it or not, that was the family business at play!
Personally, I love the idea of nepotism. I mean that loosely, in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way. But, in all seriousness, I am absolutely in favor of family businesses. Nepotism may often be met with criticism, because it generally involves favoring family members who are not qualified or insufficient or others who are fit for a particular job title or position.
Now, I don’t agree with hiring fools, just because we are related. However, as a business owner, my expansion plan absolutely includes my family. There is nothing like having family members – people who are closest to me, people who I trust the most, and people that I know have my best interest at all times – working together in business and legacy.
It’s truly an unmatched dynamic, and when it works, it works!

Maresa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who don’t know, my name is Maresa Talbert, Esq., and I am the founder and CEO of Talbert Law Office, APC, your favorite, “go-to” legal resource for all things Business, Nonprofit & Intellectual Property Law.
TLO is a virtual law practice that helps entrepreneurs, founders, and creatives start a business or nonprofit, maintain legal compliance, avoid risks, and protect personal and intellectual property assets through business formations, contracts, trademark registrations, and so much more.
I like to say that TLO is not just a transactional exchange of goods and services, but that we truly value purpose over profit. In all that I do, I want to (1) honor the God; (2) make my family proud; and (3) serve my community, and I believe that is reflected through TLO by (1) delivering a premier client experience; (2) providing culturally relevant education; and (3) empowering my community to thrive in their purpose and build legacy.
I love to see my community succeed in all facets, but especially in business. It has been statistically proven that entrepreneurship is the main source of wealth creation. So, it is incredibly rewarding to serve in a capacity that helps my clients toward a goal, which can ultimately provide access to exclusive levels of freedom and opportunity.
Apart from wearing the hat of business owner and CEO, I am wife, daughter, sister, friend, sweet tea connoisseur and foodie.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I am continually evolving, but from the beginning of building my practice, I became my own ideal client, and I’ve continued to be my own ideal client. It sounds cliché, but I treat my clients the way that I wanted to be treated.
What do I mean by that? The way that I conduct business is done from the perspective of what I would expect as a client. My pricing structure came about from asking myself the question, “What could I afford and what would I be willing to pay as a client of Talbert Law Office? I also developed my scope of services from a lens of what I would reasonably expect as a client.
In every part of my business, I have been my own ideal client. I didn’t increase the price of my services UNTIL I was willing to hire other service providers and pay 4-5 figures for a service.
As I continue to evolve, I will continue to treat my clients the way that I want to be treated, and that has definitely contributed to the brand loyalty that I have fostered among my clientele.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I started out volunteering and engaging with community before TLO was ever conceptualized, and it is how most people initially became familiar with me. So, I’d have to say that my service to community has been the best source of new clients. Talbert Law Office, as a firm, is advocacy in action. I am very proud of our service to clients, but I am most proud of our service to community.
