We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcy Solin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcy below.
Hi Marcy, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
In todays lifestyle, everyone looks to the internet to fulfill or give them the answers To whatever their needs are.
I am happily very old school, and in my industry of creating and designing wedding invitations, I need to feel the connection with my clients and prefer to meet them one on one. This is my way of getting a full visual vibe and as well it works both ways, that my client is able to relate to my vision and build a trust that I will be the perfect solution to their needs. You cannot achieve this personal connection through the internet.
Marcy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For as long as I can remember, I always loved patterns, and colours. My mother would watch me mix stripes and polka dots together and wear them with pride! Design has been in my blood since I was young, my grandfather was a pattern maker and I loved watching him take pride in his work.
I knew that I wanted to go into the design field in high school, I started out in mechanical drawing, took art classes, loved sculpture, and my medium of choice was always chalk, because of its ability to control the flow and movement and seamless blending.
I decided to build up my portfolio and got accepted to Dawson college in the interior design program , I had just turned 16 and thought I was ready for this adventure, however not mentally prepared for the gruelling hours and found out quickly that I was not prepared.
Skip forward almost 40 yrs, I had an opportunity to help out a collègue who had started up in the invitation industry … and eventually took over the business.
It’s been almost 7 yrs of hard work and devotion, I have build up a great network of many lovely couples who support me and often refer new clients my way which I am incredibly grateful for their trust in my ability to create that perfect invite.
My goal is to get it right, and to work together with my clients, making the experience an easy one, to make the experience easy, stress free and that I’m always available to them
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The way I have seen growth in my clientele, is definitely through word of mouth from past clients. I often get messages from them telling me that they have just referred a friend who just got engaged, and that’s the best feeling, knowing that they trust my work ethic and are happily telling their friends about their experience with me.
I never fully imaged the impact of networking, which has opened my eyes to talent in other creative vendors, also working in the events industry and many who have referred customers my way and vice-versa! This is what is so unique and eye opening , I am very lucky to be able to broaden my knowledge through all these vendors , and highly respect their workman ship and talent! I really feel honoured that we can rally together to add growth to our business industry.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Honesty is the best policy! That’s been my motto for as long as I can speak those words. As a designer, the amount of hours that get put into creating invitation are countless.
From behind the scenes, there is so much thought process to navigate, and I tell my clients that I am not the internet, I am a human who speaks to you via email, sometimes up to 20 back and forth discussions, about colours and layout and fonts and I will always be upfront about my work ethics, and I know that this is what has built up my reputation. I want to give a client a product that I know it would also be one that I would love to receive .
