We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marcus Wilson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marcus, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
Well for starters, I love to cook. Cooking has been my passion since I was a child and it was something that I always knew I wanted to pursue. Once I started my career in IT, I knew that something was missing, so I decided to pursue photography. In that time I became a talented and seasoned photographer but something still was missing. It was food, my calling, so I decided to combine the two passions and teach people how to cook through engaging visuals and approachable cooking techniques. Food and cooking was something that I was born to do and I always had a burning desire to become an established, well trained and versitale cook. No other medium has a greater capacity to bring different walks of life together like food. I mean, think about it, if four people who speak different languages are in a room full food and empty stomachs, what are they going to do? Eat?!?! And guess what? If they all like the food, their eyes are going to light up, they will look at each other in shock and laughter as they enjoy their meal. They may even push the people to try something that’s different that on the table. Tis is the power of food, it brings people together from all walks of life. Whether they’re rich, poor, depressed, happy, anxious, food will always always comfort them. Now imagine being able to create amazing meals at home and share the expierence of consuming them with you closing friends and family.

Marcus, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a certified big back!!! On a serious note, I noticed that alot of people are intimidated of the kitchen and often cook simply to feed themselves. I don’t believe in that. I think everyone should be able to cook a great meal at home that they are proud of. My goal is simple, teach people how to make restuarant quality food at home in an approachable way. Quality ingredients and simple cooking techniques elevate the simplest meals into something that you can be proud to share with your friends and family or take pictures and post online. The proudest moment I’ve had is seeing people attempt to cook the meals I post on social media. Often time people will start with ” I know this doesn’t look like you cook it” But that is not the point to me, you stepped out of your comfort zone and tried to do something different. That is the greatest feeling about doing this journey

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Social media. Marketing on Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, and youtube will take you a long way. Engaging with the people who comment, like, and share creates a community. The biggest lesson I’ve learn to genuinly build a community. Inviting people on the show to try to food, giving people pointers on cooking techniques, or even just thanking someone for sharing goes a long way to growing your audience and following.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutly. I’m an Atlanta native and my city gets disrespected for our food on a daily basis. Whether it’s complaints about customer service, quality of food, expensive menus etc. I want to change that narative because we have great food here. Atlanta is home to incredible chefs and restaurants, you just have to get out house and go try different restaurants. I want to start a food renaissance. I want to see restaurants, chefs, and homecooks push the needle forward and challenge themselves to create the best food they can and truly bring their visions to life
