We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marcus Whitner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marcus, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I have always had a great imagination. I’ve always wanted to be a multimillionaire, but chasing the money wasn’t the goal. I wanted to be an asset and of value at something! I would have to say that my biggest risk came in 2011 when I made the decision to move to the mid-west. Thirteen hours away from any close relative other than my wife, children, and In-Laws. It took me out of my comfort zone and forced me to become “MAN.” I was able to achieve obtaining my college degree along with discovering my passion for Multimedia. I spent 2011-2017 developing mentally, physically, and spiritually.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I decided that I wanted to own a clothing brand in 2006. I was just hanging out with friends, not going anywhere in life at that time. One day I had enough and told myself, “I’m going to create something.” I came up with a clothing line in which I began to take my artistic skills and utilize them to create my brand. Eventually I got tired of having to single handedly create each article of clothing so I gave up on it. Around 2011 I decided that I still had a love for creating a clothing brand, but I wanted more. I discovered a love for photography and decided that I would combine the two and turn it into a Multimedia Brand, BMSCR (Blessed Man Success Certified Royalty)
I was a husband, father, college student and full time employee, yet I would stay up at all hours of the night learning and creating. One thing that I discovered about problem solving was that people are always going to need three things…Clothing, food, and entertainment. I wanted to solve problems from two out of the three.
What sets me apart from everyone else is vision and detail. Just because you pick up a camera, and take a pick doesn’t mean that you are a photographer. Just because you put a quote or statement on a shirt doesn’t make you a brand. I’m most proud of the growth. The journey has been long and yet I am still learning something new everyday.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I had to put business on hold once I became a Father. I needed to make sure that I made a steady income in order to help take care of my family. I put the dream and goal on hold briefly to establish an important relationship with my twin daughters. As a parent, at times our dreams have to take a backseat while we focus on real life.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
There happens to be a much to go into detail about my resilience, but I will tell you this, Having the will to never quit no matter what is something that you are not born with. It’s a choice. Every individual will take a heartbreaking loss and at that point you will have only two paths to take. You could let it destroy you, or make a decision to become great. The choice is up to you. I’m a high school dropout that made a decision to never quit. To go back to school, get my degree, create something GREAT that will help not me and my family, but also the average Joe. And no matter what…GIVE GOD THE GLORY.
