We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marcus Watkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marcus, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Learning the craft for me had been a great journey, i mean it has its high and lows at times, but overall has been great. Life is crazy and loud all the time so being able to create and learn slows me down for a bit.
Marcus, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I Am Iconic. My name is Marcus artist name(young mark) and I’m what I like to call a creative mind. I love making music, fashion, engaging with people and just overall creating.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
You know it’s like I say life is loud and crazy all the time. so we tend to miss the bigger picture or get in to a routine. For music and my work career it was the same way, I was recording myself in my room and I was going to my job and just wasn’t feeling important, so one day I just woke up wanting more, I wanted to lead, so that was a pivot point the little voice in our head that tells us what to do, and if we are lucky we listen to it sometimes.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
An important lesson I had to learn is to not get attached to everyone especially in the music business. You know anytime I interact or love someone it’s genuine, and in this business it’s not a lot of genuine people it’s usually for benefit or self gain. So my advise for upcoming creatives is don’t get attached to potential it’s a long road.
