We were lucky to catch up with Marcus Recasner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marcus, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve encompassed various skills when it comes to filmmaking which include directing, screenwriting, editing, cinematography, and visual effects. Most of what I know is from self education through watching videos on YouTube, studying other filmmakers, and lots of practice. My other knowledge is from college where I learned more about screenwriting and video production. When it comes to photography, I was able to translate what I learned about lighting and composition to take better photographs; focusing on creating a single image before creating various for a film. Being as knowledgeable as I am now, I would’ve pushed myself more on building a stronger portfolio at a younger age. This would’ve made me more knowledgeable then and I probably could’ve been more intuitive now. The most essential skill I managed to learn was lighting. Lighting in filmmaking and photography is key to creating a quality shot. I’ve been fortunate enough to practice various lighting techniques over the last ten years and hone in on how I like to create my images. Through all of this, I’ve learned so much, however there was one roadblock which stood in the way of me furthering the education in my craft; time. I say time because I want to learn so much more and become better but there’s only so much time in the day and it’s important to manage you’re time effectively.

Marcus, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started creating visual effects when I was sixteen years old. This led me to create motion graphic videos and explore the potential avenues I could take. From there, it snowballed into me learning more about video and photography. Through this, I’ve been fortunate to learn a multitude of skills which I could offer my services to. For video, I film music videos, short films, promotional videos, and corporate interviews. For photography I shoot actor and corporate headshots, promotional events, parties, families and models. With every client, I want to ensure the best quality possible and have them treasure the end product. This means creating something memorable that will want clients to return and future clients to reach out to me. Aside from the clients and business, I love what I do and having people pay me for my work is just a bonus.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
After I started learning to create motion graphics and visual effects, I made the decision at age sixteen to become a filmmaker. This goal has been in the back of mind for nearly a decade and has been motivating every creative decision up to this point. Operating my own business and learning various creative skills are all tools which have helped me reach my goal of becoming a filmmaker much closer. Learning how to operate a business has helped me become a stronger producer with skills such as scheduling and budgeting. All of the projects I’ve filmed, scripted, and photographed have helped with becoming better at crafting an image and stronger storytelling. With all of this knowledge, I hope to create feature films with compelling stories and meaning that people will want to watch.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Ultimately, the most rewarding aspect of being creative is that I’m never done creating. There’s so much more to learn and become more knowledgeable about with what I do that it’s never enough. With select jobs and careers you’ll probably need to learn only so much for what you’ll be doing. With being a creative, this isn’t the case. The more I learn over time it will only make me more ambitious to create on a grander scale.
