We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcus Owens. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcus below.
Alright, Marcus thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
The biggest risk I’ve ever taken was the one I took on myself and creating a business out of thin air literally! I come from a city “ Baltimore” where it’s not known to have much or anything up subsistence so to start a business let alone a podcast business in the height of Covid was crazy but I knew if I could just start then it would work out it had to. I’ve invested about $36,000 into this I’ve gone homeless for a dream only I could see nobody knew the pressure I was under I had an old co-host take money from me and abuse my generosity, I’ve had bad contacts you name it. but with a tight team, family, and god on my side I knew I would get it all back which I did and after a short time I say 5 months I started getting celebrities to come on like comedian Daren fleet and fox sports like Kelsey Nelson. And shortly after Vib3Z studios was born. But I was never the one to get super excited over celebrities I was more interested in the people in the cities and neighborhoods of Baltimore and of course, the kids, and I had the pleasure I would say True highlight of my whole journey was being an apart of the treehouse project for the youth of Baltimore and helping them stay off the streets and get involved in the neighborhood and into school I owe that truth to an amazing woman named Shaleece Williams. Now my podcast has been listened to from over 24 countries all around the world and I would just like To say to anyone with a dream never give up because times will be tough and you might be the only person who can see your vision but stick it out you never know what’s just around the corner
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, first I broke into this industry by pure coincidence during covid someone I knew said let’s start a podcast. I immediately said I’ve listened to podcasts for years and growing up with 6 sisters and 2 brothers you learn pretty fast you have to speak up for yourself. And after thinking hard I came up with the concept I didn’t wanna just have people come on and it just is a robotic interview series. I wanted it to be relaxed and just a spot you can come and be yourself so the VIB3Z podcast was born in September 2021 I had no idea where to start so what do most of us do google right lol I found a small mechanic shop that was hosting the podcast and boom starter recording. It wasn’t all sunshine and roses tho starting a podcast is HARD! From the concepts to how you want it to sound down to small details like where You’re going to put Your drink down but trial and error are the best teachers so after a few months in the studio with my cousin April Grady and call kawoan I started up VIB3Z Podcast studio in Towson MD.
The types of services we provide for upcoming podcasters are consultations, logo designs, and your engineer & video editor and I meet with them all to get the feel of how they want the podcast to feel and look because a lot of people had the vision of a podcast but don’t know where to start.
I definitely think what sets us apart is the fact that yes this is a business but I Taylor it to what your needs and wants are and since most time I have the bigger platform I post and repost everyone’s content and even be a guest free of charge because here at VIB3Z your success is what we guarantee I never subscribed to
The business model of just taking people’s money.
Any advice for managing a team?
I would say when it comes to managing a team yes it would be great if everyone got along and did their job but at certain points that won’t happen so I say set monthly even weekly meetings to talk about how the business is going and this is the important part allow the floor to be open and have those tough conversations on how things could be better from a manager/ boss standpoint and also as individual and team standpoints. A lot of times as bosses we get caught up in the money or the next best thing and we forget what’s making everything happen and that’s the team you have around you. So to keep morale high incentive your team, take them out to eat, or pay them a bonus for being valved hey just saying hey your doing a damn good job and thank you goes a long way.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I can’t stress this enough networking networking networking! A lot of people look past that key part. You are only as big as your village so go out to events meet up with like-minded people hell even not so-like-minded and sharpen your people skills sometimes that door you wanna go through someone else has the keys. We all wanna just do it ourselves and I’ve learned it’s a lot easier to row a boat with a crew. And I would. Also, I like to add social media I know I know but you can reach such a broad audience by just really taking the time to learn Instagram, Tiktok and hey for all My hands-off people you can pay someone to do it for you but you have to put in the work to find the right people it is your business after all.
