We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcus McDuffie. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcus below.
Hi Marcus, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I watched a lot of photography tutorials on YouTube, and from there I self taught myself on how to use a editing software and to operate a camera by learning the lighting ratios, apertures, and shutter speeds. It was difficult in the beginning, but when I started to get the hang of things, it became easy for me. This is something different for me and I’ve gotten this far. I pushed myself to say giving up isn’t a option. I feel as if the the learning process is going well for me at a good pace. I don’t want to rush myself. I believe in taking your time to get the best results. The biggest obstacle that has stood in my way was my fear of failing. I’ve worked hard to get to where I’m at, and don’t want to make a mistake of losing everything I worked hard for. The skills that were most essential to me is post processing which is editing and retouching photos. Using software like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom allows me to enhance the quality of my photos, correct any flaws, and adjust elements like color, contrast, and brightness. I feel that working with Adobe Software over the years has helped me elevate my photography to the next level and create images that truly stands out.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve gotten into the photography business through the car scene that I also have a passion for. Back in 2018, It all started with a few pictures that I took of my friends cars and shared it on social media. A lot of people were liking and sharing my pictures telling me that I take good pictures and I should continue to keep it up. Right there I thought about becoming a photographer and take pictures. I didn’t know anything about photography and or any software and how to go about it, All I had was a iPhone and a editing app as a start up. It went well for a while until I was gifted a Canon camera and I knew it was going to be a huge game changer for me. In the middle of me learning my new camera, I had to think of a business name as well because before it was “Marcus McDuffie Photography”. It was too long and it didn’t catch. I was on YouTube watching a video, and a car photographer had a “Who Shot Ya?” logo on his car, and I jokingly said to myself “Goomer Shot It”, right there it clicked. Goomer is a nickname that was given to me by my mother and I ran with it. I was very excited and quickly changed the name and created a new logo that stood out. I’m a versatile photographer. I like to work with anything and anybody to perfect my craft, and even learn from other content creators. What I’m mostly proud of is my growth in my business and myself. I’m still learning about the business and my skills to become a better photographer. GoomerShotIt is a self made brand that is always in motion and love to collaborate with others whether its another content creator and or a client. My goal is is make sure my client is satisfied with the work we create together and build a positive relationship,
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Stay consistent with your work and put yourself out there as much as possible. There’s no such thing as you “doing too much”. Continue to raise the bar for yourself and show out your work. The more you do that, the more people will be noticing your work and wanting to collaborate with you. Believe in yourself and the work you put in,
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started out creating a business page on social media, posted all of my work and shared my business page to other followers. I consistently post my business page on my personal page every day and made my work known. It may annoy other people, but this was my way of exposing myself. I would make little video clips about my brand and share it on my business page. The more my work was getting shared, people started to notice and follow me on social media. It has also caught attention of other content creators and clientele that wanted to work with me and see what I have to offer.
