Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marcus Marcelli. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marcus, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with a fun one – what’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
In my particular field, I try to create and produce stories that matter for the big screen. This is something as simple as revolutionary in the times we live in today. We are now used to poor storytelling and endless movie sagas that repeat the same narrative repeatedly. Somehow there is the disbelief that all the stories have been told already and that now we are running out of ideas, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Nowadays there are very few good movies because no one dares to tell fresh stories for many reasons. However, the times are changing fast and soon the audience will be demanding good shows capable of speaking about untold truths. This is my mission and my statement, to bring back the art of storytelling in the movie business.

Marcus, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started as an actor in Hollywood, in both theater and film, and with time my passion evolved. I started to feel more the need for better scripts and better storytelling than the ones I was reciting. Nowadays I keep my acting career going along with my other fields, such as producing and writing scripts. At the moment. I am involved in a project that would see the RMS Queen Mary and the City of Long Beach portrayed in a new Historical Fantasy show that I have been working on for the past 4 years.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I believe truth is the most fundamental principle of storytelling. No genre or subject is exempt from it, whether we are watching a documentary or a fantasy, what we are looking for is to understand ourselves better; and the world we live in; or sometimes we just want to see ourselves in certain situations. The audience is extremely acute in spotting a story without any consistency, in fact, most of us keep on watching the same old movies that have made us dream of the past.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I believe most people have a hard time realizing how much the world has changed in the past few years. We live in a world interconnected with endless possibilities, we cannot think about anything in our society in the same way we were thinking about it even 5 years ago. We need good storytellers now more than ever and it will happen soon that a new improved way of storytelling will be developed for the movie industry. Mankind and its complexity will remain the same, but we need to update our communication, capable of speaking a language that the new generations can identify with.
