We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marcus Malone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marcus, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Working in the cannabis industry I’ve noticed the negative connotations about the plant! While currently working at Glass House Brands and being a former athlete, my mission has always been to showcase how cannabis can benefit the athletes verses pills and is a better relaxation method than alcohol. Understanding that through my job, content, and story telling i can provide a different perspective in the space as well as create opportunities for minorities who are passion about the plant through my productivity

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Cannabis found me as i was a resource to a minority group looking for athletes to that would be interested in getting into the cannabis industry. First helping Lamar Odom get his first cannabis deal and structuring it then with Glass House Brands actually talking myself into a job as i was asked to be apart of a meeting and giving helpful feedback.
The problems I’ve been able to solve for GHB id say is help humanizing the brand and the products we sell in the market, tapping into influential communities in the LA area in which we can write our own narrative and provide a “cool” factor. Quiet the misconceptions some may have about us through story telling , collaborations, and hard work. I’m thankful and most proud of how I’ve been able to find carve a nitch in a growing industry and start up company and also having the ability to create projects and events that bring people together over the plant.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to De stigmatized the negative connotations around cannabis and tell a story in which people can learn and see the benefits of the plant. My second goal is to write a chapter in the cannabis industry of how culture and lifestyle marketing plays a huge part of any company’s success

Have you ever had to pivot?
I think we all set goals of how we initially envision things will go but nothing goes directly to plan, sometimes it’s budget cuts and or loss which will force you to rely strictly on creativity and resources, some times your resources don’t come through and you have to “pay to play.” But being able to be resilient in your mind and actions while understanding when to pivot is key to success
