Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marcus Left Jr. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marcus , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Moving Mountains Mission: Ensure that every mountain is moved through the acts of communication, goal setting, and decision making; while empowering the youth to build character, overcome adversity, and generate personal growth in the realms of teaching, coaching, and mentoring.
The mission is meaningful to me simply because whether I am teaching, coaching, or mentoring, the objective does not change. The goal is to have a positive impact on everyone I come across, whether it be on the field, classroom, or in a public setting. I want to leave an imprint on their life.
Considering that these three careers are interchangeable, it’s not at all difficult to change “hats” when the setting changes. The reason being is because I don’t just teach “X’s and O’s” on the field nor do I just teach math and science in the classroom. I teach “Life” in each setting. The only difference is the terminology that I use.
Whether I’m coaching you on the field, or teaching you in the classroom, I am striving to get the best out of you. That’s teaching boys how to become young men in all areas of life, which allows the young women to understand how men should treat them.
Marcus , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Marcus Left Jr. I’m a multi subject high school teacher, a football coach, and a mentor. I’ve always been an individual who strives to bring out the best in others. The reason being is because everyone needs at least one person to believe in their abilities, and I aim to be that one person.
Moving Mountains provides a service of guidance and mentorship. In a one on one or group setting, I work to mold boys into positive young men by being a positive role model in all areas of life. On top of that, I provide a community and safe space for teens as well as adults if need be to receive motivation, encouragement, and support to follow their dreams no matter the adversity that may come.
I truly believe what sets me apart from other teachers and coaches is that I don’t just teach subjects or “X’s and O’s,” I teach “Life,” which is applicable to everyone I come across whether you’re with me in the classroom or on the field. Bringing the two careers together allows me to successfully develop positive young men in all aspects of life.
I’m most proud of the growth that I see in each individual I come across. Personal growth is essential to becoming your best self, so being able to witness the growth of these young men first hand is a beautiful thing.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Growing up my goal was to have an opportunity to attend the NFL Draft, get drafted, and of course play in the NFL. I was blessed with the opportunity to play collegiate football, so while in college, my main focus was the NFL and doing whatever it took to get there. After two seasons, being completely honest with myself, I knew the NFL dream was becoming unachievable.
During my senior year of college, as well as a year afterwards, I worked at Amazon. I was unsure of my career path, so Amazon provided a sense of comfort. For years, my mother always told me I would eventually become a teacher. I never wanted to be a teacher, so I never understood why she thought I would become a teacher.
It wasn’t until I took a leap of faith and decided to apply for a teaching opportunity, and give it a shot. I quickly fell in love with my career. On top of teaching, I dove into coaching football. I was now able to have a direct impact on individuals in two different settings, while incorporating mentorship in both groups. I’m able to coach the sport that I adore, and help other young players achieve their dreams. Moreover, I’m able to help guide young men through life and be a role model to the youth.
So, I would say branching into different careers has helped build my reputation. Whether I am in the classroom or on the field, I’m always teaching, I’m always coaching, and I’m always mentoring. That alone allows me to build relationships with everyone I come across and become a person they trust to lead them down a positive path.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
As cliche as it may sound, I’m able to increase clientele by being myself. I’m a people person, meaning I value individuals and everything that comes along with them; feelings, thoughts, ideas, emotions, etc. I want the best for every individual I come across and they understand that.
I teach my students the exact way I teach my players. I relate everything that I teach to “Life” because that’s what I’m preparing each individual to succeed in. One day football will come to an end, as well as your time sitting in a classroom, so my job is to take these high school boys and mold them into young men over the course of their high school career and on after.
