We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcus Kowalsky. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcus below.
Marcus, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish that I’d started on this path sooner than I did. I was a little late to the party when it came to deciding what I wanted to work towards, even more so when I actually started taking steps towards accomplishing that goal. I hadn’t set my sights on becoming an electronic artist until senior year in high school, and didn’t start getting serious about it until halfway through college. I see new, young artists popping up all the time. It’s encouraging, but at the same time it makes me wonder how much further along on my path I’d be if I had started sooner.

Marcus, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Markat, I make electronic music and DJ too. I don’t really have a specific genre within EDM, as I like to put my own spin on whatever I’m making. I lean towards dubstep and future bass, but I’ve made trap, hardstyle, and I have some drum & bass in the works right now as well. Keep an eye out, there’s going to be a lot more Markat content dropping in 2024.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I’ve heard a good amount of people say that it’s “easy” or “not a real job” to do stuff like this. The reality is that this is a 24/7 job. Any time that you put in, or that you don’t, is reflected in the results. Navigating social media on its own is enough work for a small team, from making content to editing and following trends. That’s before we even start talking about the business side of things like pitching, networking, etc.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Not necessarily something I wish I knew about, but something that I wish existed earlier. All of these new, emerging AI tools are extremely helpful to create content. I don’t think it’s any replacement for hiring actual artists or editors, but incredibly valuable for someone working by themselves or on a budget.
