We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcus Hilson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcus below.
Hi Marcus , thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Ever since I was a child I’ve always had a passion for film, comic books and video games. From that passion grew the ambition to being involved in those hobbies in some way, shape or form. So fast forward to today I have a mobile game based upon the Chinese mythological character Sun Wu Kong also known as the Monkey King as well as a comic book coming down the line ad well based upon that series as well as another. My podcast The UnPODpular Opinion used to focus on film news, reviews and opinions from myself and others but I’ve decided to take it in a different direction creatively and take about more serious topics surrounding men’s health, Wealth, and mental well being. I also started Grayview Radio which is an internet radio station for independent r&b and hip hop artist with positive messaging as well as for podcasters of any kind to get there shows or messages out. I’ve made it my mission to pursue the things that make me happy just like I did as a child as well as help others along the way, even if it’s in the smallest of ways and I’m a firm believer in the universal laws of karma.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My introduction and love for film first started off as a young child when I saw the original Night of the Living Dead for the very first time. I was not only intrigued by the story telling but also how well the film was able to visually capture my attention to the point that I felt like I was in the situation as well. Since then I knew I wanted to be apart of the film/ content creation industry in some way shape or form. First I started off in film school in Nashville and even participated in a film festival as the lead actor, that made me come to the realization that I didn’t just want another job within the industry but I wanted to be creatively in charge. Since film making is a long process that takes up a lot of time, money, and resources. I’ve decided to start a Podcast discussing films as well as other topics in between doing other creative ventures such as mobile gaming and a online internet radio station. My goal is to not only create forms of entertainment but platforms for other independent artist’s, podcasters or content creators through my podcast as well as my internet radio station.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn is creatively living with the idea “Practice Makes Perfect”. That slogan or concept has been used and taught to not just myself but many others when you and I have to realize that their is no such thing as Perfect. I’ve procrastinated, doubted myself as well as quit on different projects because I felt that I didn’t reach or was never going to reach that level of perfection, but now I’ve realized perfection doesn’t exist.
Have you ever had to pivot?
While I was in film school in Nashville, I had to make the tough decision of choosing my job over completing school. The school I was attending had an 8 hour schedule and my evening job at the time went into peak season which changed my from 8 to 12 hours, so I unfortunately had to make the choice that was best for me and my family.
