We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marcus Evans. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marcus below.
Marcus, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
I believe family businesses can thrive with the right family members involved. While it may not sound appealing, it is still business at the end of the day. A clear separation between work and personal life is essential for family businesses to succeed. Owners must avoid showing favoritism to any team members and maintain a focus on what will grow the business and benefit all employees. Choosing the right family members to work with is akin to selecting the right employees who share the company’s enthusiasm for its success. However, alongside the benefits, there are pitfalls that can have the opposite effect when deciding who to involve in the business. With that in mind, ask yourself: “If I were to work a job with my family members, who would I prefer to collaborate with without risking my position, even by association?”
Children are precious beings who represent the future, but are they truly beneficial to bring into the business? We all know the common story of parents wanting the best for their children, often creating a blueprint for their future. I can hear it now: “They just want the best for their child’s future.” While this approach comes from good intentions, it can sometimes lead to controlling behavior. I don’t have children, but I have thought about it, and if I were to have kids, I would first explore whether they have an interest in what I do or if they are passionate about other pursuits. A child is not a vessel for their parents’ unfulfilled dreams; they are their own person with their own aspirations. As a millennial, I strongly encourage all parents to heed this advice: guidance should not prevent your children from falling; rather, it should teach them how to get back up. My mother often told me, “What is meant for you will happen, and what is not, won’t.” This essentially means that everything happens for a reason, and no one can take away what is truly meant for you. Please allow your children to follow their own paths.
After all this discussion about family businesses, you might wonder, “Has he experienced any of the challenges he mentioned?” The answer is no, I haven’t—at least, not yet. However, I have witnessed how successful Black family businesses thrive and grow from their shared experiences. The dynamics of family businesses can differ significantly from one family to another. So, let me leave you with one final question to ponder: Is your family strong enough to handle a business together?
