We were lucky to catch up with Marcus Celiano recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marcus, thanks for joining us, we are excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
I would have gone into the trades much sooner and not waste time in college. First, I would have went and got all my certifications/licenses (fertilizer, snow, pesticide, patios, walls, etc.). Then I would have worked for a company out of high school for a year or so to get a better understanding on the industry while building credit and saving money. After that, they I would have started business.
Marcus, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I first got into the industry when my parents were renovating their backyard with installing hardscaping, a pool, landscape lighting, irrigation, and plantings etc. When I looked out the window while I was home during the time they were installing, I was mesmerized by the machines and the transformation taking place in my backyard. I have home videos of myself sitting in machines with the foreman named Jose along with installing hardscapes in my own backyard starting at the age of 5. Looking back on these home videos now, it is a humbling expierence to see where it all began. As I grew up, I transitioned away from landscaping and into more sports as I grew up I developed a team mentality and realized the benefits of dedication hard work to a craft. Understanding that failure is part of success and it’s what you do with the failure that makes you a better person is essential in sports and in business. Having this understanding going into business has helped my growth and success. Something that I am habitual about now that has helped me mentally over the past several years is getting up early every single morning and starting my day with accomplishing something. This allows me to have a mental advantage and fuel my productivity for the day
The main problem that we are solving for clients is being able to make it easy forpeople transform their properties as well as maintain it. We provide safe, full service, and ease of mind landscaping, hardscaping along with snow and ice management services to all of our clients. We provide a turnkey process for them when they contact us and we are here to make their lives easier.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A time that I had to pivot in life is when I realized that I was not meant to be a student and work for someone else. After having success in my landscaping business through the Summers of high school and early years of college, I realized that hard work and dedication will bring you success. I had to pivot my future and put it in my own hands with dropping out of college and investing all my life savings into a business.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
My advice is simply through empowering others. Giving people the responsibility and opportunity to take ownership of their position and make mistakes and have them learn from it is essential. Caring more about the growth of an individual rather than making everything perfect from day one is essential. Being able to listen more than you speak along with have other people contribute to important decisions is a central to building a great company culture and team.
